I really liked the Brennan, but the first 1/3 or was pretty slow going for me (I know a few people who didn't make it through it.) If it does bog you down early on, though, I think the end result is more than worth it.

In my very complicated justification, I keep thinking the TPB is closer to MMPB than a HC is to MMPB, so I am gradually closing the gap? Plus, TPB takes up less space on the shelf and is easier to lug around.

Ooh Maria Luisa Bombal! We read her in high school, because La Amortajada (The Death Shrouded? I have no idea how that got translated) is a classic.

I really liked Laura Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate too, but I tried to pick up this other one that was popular back home--The Law of Love? -- and I just couldn't handle it. I don't know anything about Swift as Desire though.

The Hypersexuality of Race makes me salivate. :) That sounds interesting as does Trin Min Ha's work. I actually haven't read her though I know I should *sigh*.
