One really interesting source of 'oriental' steampunk fashion ideas to be would be the early Meiji Restoration period in Japan, the Western colonial fashion in full force collision steamrollering over the artificial formal tradion of the Tokugawa era. Top hatted samurai, and so forth. Then try and imagine it pushing back a little the other way, so the tide of fashion adoption didn't go all one way. The Bruce Sterling story Flowers of Edo is set in this era.
