It's a different formality level, yeah. -hada is fairly formal (but not rigidly so; you wouldn't sound ridiculous saying it to people) and -hae is quite informal; you'd only say that to peers. I'm not even sure the textbook covers -hae because they probably want to keep well-meaning foreigners from getting beaten up for insolence. :-D
