BAD: One of my transcripts still has not arrived so I cannot mail out second half of application (it is so late because I was stupid and forgot to check the "individual signed envelope" option the first time). I am hoping it gets in tomorrow.

GOOD: I actually met all my writing deadlines for this year! I will now proceed to ignore the rest of applications until 2008, bwahahaha!

BAD: I paid my library fine. It wasn't so bad in my terms ($22.75), but I think it horrified the librarian, as late fees are usually $0.25/day. Also, it may have been because the itemized receipt was over two feet long. I watched as it scrolled from the register... and scrolled... and scrolled. The librarian sternly eyed me as she handed over my books, telling me that ILL fines were $1/day. "Yeah, I know," I said, attempting to not sound too guilty. I feel the fine is not that bad for someone who routinely has fifteen books checked out at any given time.

GOOD: Library holds for Anne Stuart's cold female assassin romance and Robot Dreams and Ha'Penny now in my grubby little hands!

BAD: My car's CD player has broken. I told my car-literate co-worker the symptoms, which elicited a "Yup, it's fried." Not having my own music during my commute is slowly driving me insane! I have the radio, but it is boring! Also, I just made myself a new driving mix and really want to be listening to that instead! Grrr. At least the only CDs stuck in the player were mixes that are saved on my computer.

GOOD: I HAVE $125 WORTH OF AMAZON GIFT CERTIFICATES BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Bad librarian!

Sternly Eyeing People is reserved for those who have lost multiple books; lots of little fines (as a receipt two feet long would indicate) mean that you are a Good Reader who doesn't always keep up with dates.

So saith the librarian who has, uh, thirty-three overdue books out.

I always think it's weird when librarians get all huffy about librarian fines. Because I pay my fines, they make money off of me.

So technically, by having overdue books, I am helping the library.

Don't feel bad about your library fine--I work in one where we often get books returned that are several years overdue.

I once returned a book that was 49 years overdue. It was the library's record and got a tiny mention in the local paper. (I bought it at a garage sale, then noticed that it had not actually been retired from circulation.)

Heh. I've had a late fine like that -- I always feel as though I ought to get looked more kindly at if I had twenty books out for five days late than if I had two books out for four months late. (Not that I expect leniency in terms of the fines, just the Looks... but surely that simply means that I am an avid reader who maybe doesn't keep track of everything perfectly.)

Once, my library mailed me a charge for a $3,000 fee. It turned out okay -- they thought I'd lost the (apparently!) uber-expensive books when I was just holding onto them an extra week -- but still. That was an experience I never want to hyperventilate again.

If I couldn't reborrow my books, I'd also have crazy library fines. It's also hard to keep track of due dates, when I regularly borrow books from 2 different library systems.

If I'm smart or organized, I just have the transcripts sent directly where they're going. Still worrying but also not my problem, a net win for me. Yay for stomping writing deadlines!

Hee, yeah. I keep forgetting when everything is due, even though I get handy reminder emails. And sometimes I have finished the book on time so I don't renew, but I get bogged down by other errands and just don't have time to make it to the library that day.

!!! I had a three-digit fine from my college library because I had stubbornly held on to a book I needed for my thesis long after some other student requested it. I am not sure who that student was, but I am certain they too were writing on the same thing, because a ton of my thesis books got recalled! It was very annoying!

Yes! It is called Ice Storm. So far I am not that into it, but that is because I want even more coldness and less "We do this for the greater good!"

Hee, thanks! I actually don't need it, because my library does send out overdue notices (Which is why the fine is much less than it would be otherwise). I, uh, sometimes just don't make it anyhow.
