Pushing Daisies 1x03-1x08
Tue, Dec. 11th, 2007 09:46 amI continue to be overwhelmed by the cute! Also, I know everyone has told me this already, and yet, I still spent every episode saying, "Emerson, how are you so awesome?!"
I am extremely glad that Chuck and Olive are no longer rivals. Well, they are a little, but it's finally out in the open, and I love that they're scheming together. And they have conversations about the aunts, which means the show passes the Bechdel Test!
And I'm not sure how Ned and Chuck keep being so sweet, but they are. I particularly loved the rooftop dance in beekeeper outfits; odd and strange and yet completely romantic, like so much of the show.
While I was a little put off by the Japanese tourists in episode 2, I had a lot of fun with the southern duelist who was Chinese and his secret history. Yeah, the look of his ancestor was completely stereotypical, but I like the teeny subversion of expectation when I found out the guy was a) Chinese and b) not great at swordsfighting because of kung fu, but because he was a southern gentleman type!
I also liked the little bit with the polygamist having wives of different races and that not being a big deal (though of course Emerson gets paired with the black woman...).
Hrm, that actually sounds horrible when I type it out! But really, it didn't feel like it on screen...
And then, there is Emerson! He is so awesome! I hadn't completely warmed to him in the first few episodes, since he basically sits in the back and grumbles, but I love his grumbling so much now! He's the one person who goes around cutting through the show's charm, which makes the rest of it that much more charming. And! He is a pop-up book fan! LOVE.
I continue to like Ned and Chuck, but their relationship worries do get a little old after a while (ergo the awesomeness of Emerson!). And I adore Olive and the aunts to pieces. Also, I just love the look of the show, the colors and the sixties and seventies influence (Chuck was dressing fifties, but now she seems to be in sixties or early seventies outfits), the way everything is candy colored and not quite real.

Tue, Dec. 11th, 2007 07:13 pm (UTC)I am *so* happy I just got a large HDTV. Everything is so pretty! I might even keep watching Smallville, because it is in HD. But I'm still ditching Heroes for now, because it was really good and has fallen, whereas Smallville never reached all that high in the first place.
I can't say why without spoilers, but I am especially looking forward to the upcoming episode.
