I have now seen Return of the King for the second time.
This is definitely a movie that really needs to be seen on the big screen. *sigh* They're going to make so much money off me.
Still good. Still cried. I think Shelob was actually scarier the second time around, for some reason. Ick, the webs!!
I was much less glued to the screen, which was probably a good thing, considering how shaken I was after the first time. I think my favorite part if I absolutely had to pick would be the charge of the Rohirrim onto Pelennor Fields, complete with Theoden's speech. I was grinning like mad through all of that.
Things I noticed this time round:
- the choice method of killing for the Ring seems to be strangling. Gollum strangles Frodo, vice versa, Sam and Gollum strangling party, Smeagol and Deagol.
- the slo-mo fall Frodo makes when the Eye is on him is really really dorky, ala a very badly executed ballet move. And it's in slo-mo, which makes it that much worse.
- Legolas really says nothing that adds any value ("The horses are restless. The men are quiet."), but he's purty anyway.
- Frodo does the same silly falling move leaping for a rock while escaping the pouring lava of doom.
- How long can Merry and Pippin rub Frodo's tummy and make funny faces?
The not so silly:
- one small Sam-Frodo moment I didn't really notice before that I really like was Frodo wanting to save the water and Sam saying, "I don't think we'll make it home, Mr. Frodo," and then standing and offering his hand for them to go on regardless. That's why I love Lord of the Rings. They're there in the face of all odds, and despite that, they all go on anyway. Anyway, I love Sam for that (among so many more reasons).
- the three moments that bring actual tears to my eyes as opposed to sniffles: "Wake up, Mr. Frodo! Wake up! Don't go where I can't follow!" (that one's my big one. I think if I actually really cried at movies, I would have been bawling then) and "I can see the Shire again, Sam" and the final goodbye at the ship.
- I finally noticed the Gondor theme. It is of the good.
- Have I mentioned just how much I love the charge of the Rohirrim? And in general the mustering of Rohan? And in general, Rohan and Theoden and Eowyn and Eomer? I love Theoden's little speech right after Aragorn has left them and everyone is panicking -- instead of reassuring them, he tells them, yes, they are right, but they're going to fight anyway. And the Rohirrim, on horses, all screaming "Death! Death!" is not them singing as they slay, but I think it captures that feeling exactly, beautiful and terrible and glorious all at once.
- I *heart* Eowyn so much.
- I *heart* Pippin so much.
Random things:
- There's this scene, I think in the Shelob sequence, where Frodo knocks Gollum off a cliff, foreshadowing Mt. Doom.
- I kind of wish Sam had reluctantly dropped the Ring into Frodo's hand or at least onto the ground, instead of having it snatched away. Still wish he had gone back without the lembas reminder.
- Pippin rescuing Faramir is the second time he's literally faced the fire against Denethor's will to save Gondor, first being the beacons.
- I love the beacon sequence, looking for that small pile of wood or two amidst the giant screen and the towering landscape and then having that flicker of orange flame appear in the corner of my eye.

Wed, Jan. 7th, 2004 03:57 pm (UTC)Hee!
And too bad about the ICQ. Yeah, ICQ is the goa'uld mother of all messenger services. All other messenger services are spawned from her "Uh-oh!"s. I'm only getting back on to chat with a few specific people. ICQ is like crack. It keeps you from getting much needed sleep.

Wed, Jan. 7th, 2004 10:11 pm (UTC)I remember when everyone I knew had ICQ, and I was so mad because we were behind some sort of firewall that didn't let us have it! Grrr.
Then everyone moved to IM, kind of like fandoms flocking to Alias or HP or something. Are you on IM?

Wed, Jan. 7th, 2004 07:59 pm (UTC)Rohan, Eowyn, Arwen
Wed, Jan. 7th, 2004 07:29 pm (UTC)Also, don't love Arwen--but have a huge double-sided movie poster of her, can't resist putting it in my window.
Re: Rohan, Eowyn, Arwen
Wed, Jan. 7th, 2004 10:50 pm (UTC)Arwen? Don't hate her, but she doesn't really interest me... I used to love the elves, but now, not as much, interestingly.
