Hrm. The more I think about it, the more I have problems with the phrasing of "acting white." I do think that POC are rewarded when they act according to the values and norms of white upper- and middle-class, but on the other hand, I think when POC are "too white" (to be determined by white society), they're also seen as a threat and need to be taken down another way. Ex. how Asians are simultaneously praised for being the "model minority" while also seen as a threat if they are "too" model. Ergo the Japanese scare in the 1980s, the Indian scare now with regards to outsourcing in the tech industry, and the stereotypes of the "emotionless, mechanical, rote memorizing Asian."
And I think some of the "getting above yourself" reaction is taking on the opposite of the dominant ideology and upholding that, though it is not all of it for all people.
Definitely with the ranking, and also that the ranking shifts depending on things like the economic situation, the political situation, what's in the media, etc. etc.
