oyceter: You are watching anime. Caution! (anime is crack)

I am sure a lot of you have seen this already, but [livejournal.com profile] rilina is holding nominations for the most emo anime or manga character ever. I am having tons of fun in the comments by reliving my very first anime ever, aka Gundam Wing.

Other favorites are: Kamui (X), Sasuke (Naruto), and Alex Rowe (Last Exile).

She has also started watching Neon Genesis Evangelion, my very second anime ever, and this has completely made my day(s). I suspect many EVA survivors are now gathered around her LJ, just waiting for her to hit key plot points. Please don't spoil her!

What's your first anime? If we discount Speed Racer (and other early televised things- Starblazers, Robotech, etc.), then mine was Dangaio and Gunbuster (I got them both on VHS for Christmas).

Oh, that's right, you did tell me that too. I totally forgot. GW is a weird one to come in on as well. :)

Leaving aside Speed Racer and random episodes of Sailor Moon, I think either Digimon or Pokemon.

My first in my recent run of anime obsession would be Ouran High School Host Club.

And for emo/angstiness, no-one can beat the entire cast of Weiss Kreuz.

I actually like Eva. I like the movie ending. Call me crazy :).

The anime I like includes: Evangelion, Read or Die, Serial Experiments Lain, Ergo Proxy, Speed Grapher (yes, I know it's problematic), Hades Project Zeorymer (pre-cursor to Eva), Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Ninja Scroll, Ranma 1/2, Vampire Hunter D, Hellsing (though not rabidly), Cooking Master Boy, El Hazard, Excel Saga, Ebichu the Housekeeping Hamster, Project A-Ko, Dragon Half and Miyazaki things.

I tend to like epic, disturbing, or comedic things and not like shoujo or shounen or yaoi or bishounen or anything like that.

Oh yeah, and I like Cities of Gold :). (see icon)

There definitely needs to be an emo boys of manga/anime icon.

My first anime was Fushigi Yuugi -- viewed over a period of a few months with a group of 5-10 friends, in high school, which is totally the way to see it -- and I feel there should be somebody on the cast who could give the current suggestions a run for their money. But nobody's coming to mind.

(The only female character I can think of at all is Juri from SKU, but she's only got a mild case of brooding-emo, compared to the others.)

Also, hee. "EVA survivors."

Yui is pretty emo, poor girl. Miaka's seishi are mostly not emo, despite their many reasons to be, with the possible exception of Hotohori. On the other hand, there's the ghosts of the former seishi in the ice cave...

Aha! I wasn't sure whether or not to put bitterly attacking people in the same category as brooding and whining, which is why I wasn't sure about Yui and Nakago.

Nuriko, OTOH, is impressively non-emo for somebody who does the whole taking on the dead sibling's name and gender thing.

Me too. She and her hair are both awesome.

I haven't seen a lot of the anime listed in the nominations, but the explanations are incredibly fabulous anyway.

As we've discussed else-thread, there seems to be a lack of emo women. I'm not sure I'd nominate any of the girls or women from Noir, Madlax, or Elfen Lied, especially since I'm not that crazy about the last.

This gender ratio is interesting. Why does it exist?
