New Nana!
Oh dear. It seems like Cute Nana's gotten herself into a bit of a mess. I think I must have gotten a little spoiled for this volume and possibly the next one at some point, because I could have sworn that I remembered Nobu confessing in vol. 5. Cleary not though.
Nobu has now joined my list of fictional boyfriends. I am also amused that he has the "girl" role for shoujo manga -- he makes the confession, and he's the one who flings himself into bed and cries when he sees Nana with Takumi.
That said, Yazawa is tackling some touchy subjects. I really do like that she shows things like one-night stands and that so far, there isn't a Designated Love Interest, as opposed to most manga, in which you can tell whom the heroine will end up with from page 1. I am a bit disturbed by the tossing around of "slut" so often; I think some of it is being problematized (Shin talking to Nobu about Nana getting lonely), but some of it goes back to sex without love being "slutty." Of course, everyone's giving Takumi crap for sleeping around as well, but there isn't that slut designation, which of course reflects real life, heh.
On the other hand, Nana's ambivalence about her own sexuality is really interesting and not something that I've seen often in shoujo. And I just appreciate that there is talk about sex and the pressure to have sex, especially for women.
Also, it's interesting to see Shin, although, when I think about it, a fifteen-year-old prostitute is rather disturbing, no matter how in control of it he seems to be!. And I'm wondering what's going to happen with him and Reira and Yasu. Also -- older woman and younger man! Woman paying for sex!
The other thing that I loved about this vol. was that even though so much of it is on romantic entanglements, it still emphasizes the friendship between the Nanas. I loved Punk Nana's reaction to seeing Nana and Takumi together: "Why does Trapnest have to take over everyone who's important to me?" I like Cute Nana's fear when Punk Nana doesn't come back after two weeks, and I find it really interesting how their fears and worries about each other parallel the romantic fears and worries going on at the same time.
