I assumed from several statements like that that you had spent your whole life in Taiwan prior to college.
I can totally see why! Someday I will figure out a handy shortcut for my entire life story.... It would be so useful. I am sure I could market it somehow.
My grandparents (both sides) fled China to Taiwan because of the Communist Revolution; I know more details about my mom's side because they talk more to me than I do about my dad's. I know my mom's older brother and sister were kids during that time, so they had a harder time, as opposed to my mom and her younger sister, who were born in Taiwan (my dad was also born in Taiwan). I think, though, comparatively, both sets of grandparents probably got off better than many immigrants, esp. since they were able to send my parents to grad school in the States. I mean, my mom talks about saving like mad in the States, but I suspect you had to have a certain amount of money just to send people there.
So technically my family's not really Taiwanese b/c my grandparents came over from China, but that's a whole 'nother giant can of worms having to do with current Taiwan politics....
