I'll second/third the recommendation of The Wire, if you like Homicide. I'd also recommend the original, non-fiction book Homicide on which the TV series is based; it was written by David Simon, a Baltimore Sun reporter who spent a year following city homicide detectives around. One of the reasons you get the racial casting you do on the TV series is that that is, in fact, what the ethnic makeup of the actual Baltimore homicide division is like. The fact that there's only one woman in the homicide squad is also true-to-life, or at least it was at the time Simon wrote the book. (One warning -- the book is probably a spoiler for some of the plots on the show).
