PSA: Fry's is selling DVD box sets of all the X-Files seasons for $18.99 each (aka, $18.99/season) through 4/10. I am contemplating getting some, though I really shouldn't, given the fact that I just got plane tickets to Wiscon. But if I did, which seasons would people recommend? I have seen parts of S2, most of S3 and S4, some of S5 and S6, and (unfortunately) most of S7, which is when I quit the show. Oh wait, no, I gave it another chance with Doggett, but got bored in the middle of S8.

I'm tempted to get S4 because I remember loving the cancer arc and all its angsty glory (also, Scully had awesome hair then!), and a bit tempted to get S5 since I didn't see most of it and loved "Post-Modern Prometheus."

Or maybe I will save money and not get any and Netflix. Hrm.

Back when I first started buying DVDs (and X-F was my favorite show), I opted to only buy S3-5. That was mainly because the prices on the boxsets were obscene and I *had* to choose, but I still think those are probably the most solid. I'm pretty sure that a lot of people disagree with me about S5, though, and S2 is very important in terms of the ongoing plot.

(This is also very much a personal opinion, but I prefer to pretend the series ended with the movie after S5. It's at least an informed opinion, since I watched it faithfully until it was mercifully taken off the air.)

Season 4, 5, and 2 are my best beloved, but I doubt I'll get the DVD sets just yet.

Wah! All the good seasons are sold out at Fry's online store! Yes, even after my bitter divorce from TXF, for that price I would buy the DVDs. I know I'll want to watch them again *someday*.

If you plan on buying yours from an actual Fry's store, could you possibly grab seasons 1, 4, 5, and 7 for me? (I already have 2, 3, and 6.) I'm happy to throw in fic or meta of your choice to sweeten the deal (besides actual monetary repayment).

I wouldn't actually recommend season 7 to other people, but I still felt a lot of affection for the show back then, so I tried very hard to see the good points of those episodes and it kind of stuck. I would consider 2-6 to be the classic seasons, but you kind of have to love season 1, too, because they're all so young and naive, and the pilot episode will break your heart over and over again, knowing everything that's going to happen to them.

If you're going to get S4, I'd recommend getting S5, because the cancer plot doesn't actually resolve until the season-opener two-parter. Also, S5 has "Bad Blood," which I adore with a mad passion.

Small Potatoes too, which is pretty fun. But then, I'm one of those people that fail to be bitter over X-Files :)

Ooh, thanks for the heads up! We own 1-7, but were determined not to buy the last two unless we could find a reeeeeally good deal. $18.99 qualifies, and now I don't have to have that weird, off-kilter feeling of not owning the whole show anymore.
