Wow, was Japan the only other country he could think of after saying "Azerbaijan"?

Of course, to me it sounds a little like "Americans like me can't even tell one Japanese person apart from another, so even though they may be champions in the same event she's competing in, who can even tell them apart?"

I know! And I was thinking, uh, yeah, because skating in international events is not prestigious how?

I know, seriously! There was this pause after "Azerbaijan" (and by the way, wtf is wrong with just saying Russia?), like he was searching for the name of another exotic and unfamiliar country.

I also wanted to bash him over the head and say, oh yes, I'm sure it's so hard to tell that horde of Japanese skaters apart, which is why everyone and their mother has been talking about Mao Asada for the past two years.

Seriously. He has always annoyed me before by going on and on about a skater if he thinks she's pretty, but this is really -- why did he think this was ok to say on national tv?

Ugh, yes. Also, there is the fact that quite likely the skaters could know each other, despite intl. status, given how many intl. skaters train in the US.

Sigh. This is why I sometimes hate watching the Olympics -- there is all this unacknowledged nationalism that comes out to play.

Not to mention that the "random faceless" skater quite possibly skates at the same club as the American. (That's the way it sometimes happens here, at least.)

Figure skating has never required the most intelligent commentators, unfortunately. *grumble*

Is this the guy who said of Michelle Kwan that he liked her because she skated well and was sexy? The other, female commentator, looked taken a bit aback by this. Perhaps because Kwan was only 14 at the time.

The only good thing I can see about the quote is it gave me a charming mental image of No-Face from Spirited Away trying to learn to ice skate. (Seriously, "faceless"?)

Definitely! Last year I was mad at him because he was judging the prettier skaters as better or "more pleasing to the eye."
