[livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija has now sat me down and screened several eps of SPN for me. I think we watched the episode in which Dean is terrified by flying, the one in which Dementors eat children (they are totally Dementors! Even though Dean says they're stregas), the one in which there is a short-haired blonde woman, as opposed to the multitude of long-haired blonde women, and the one in which Sam starts having migraines and becoming Cordelia.

My current impressions:

  1. Dean cracks me up, particularly his terrified face on the airplane. I have decided that Dean is like my rats: he believes he is incredibly dignified, but he is actually not, which makes everything ten times funnier.

  2. John and Dean Winchester are overcompensating for something, given their monster cars. Sam in all likelihood drove a hybrid, which he had to sell to go demon hunting.

  3. Dean interacting with children is incredibly cute.

  4. Dean shooting panicked looks at Sam in hopes of emotional intervention for interview subjects will never stop being funny.

  5. Ditto with Dean snarfing down mini hotdogs while posing as a priest.

  6. All the people on this show look the same. They need to hire a new casting agency, beccause all the men are middle-aged, thinnish and slightly balding, while all the women have long blonde hair. Luckily, since most people end up being killed, I don't get people confused.

  7. Dean is totally wearing John Winchester's old leather jacket!

I'm not sure if I am fannish, but I may randomly Tivo episodes for entertainment value.

Then after many computer problems, I finally managed to ahem the latest episode of Heroes for Rachel. It is even cooler the second time around.

More spoilery Heroes spec for 1x11

I completely confused Rachel by yelling hysterically at the screen during the conversation between Isaac and Eden, because that entire time, Isaac's painting of the Human Torch is innocently hanging in the background. Except! It is a man exploding! And it looks like he is flying! So I really do think that Nathan will end up giving Peter his powers so Peter can explode in the atmosphere and hopefully also still have healing powers from Claire and thereby save New York! And they had this painting hanging there for ages! I cannot believe the writers had this sitting in front of us the entire time!

I suspect this show is going to be incredibly fun to rewatch.

In other, non-TV-related news, the rats are now mellowing out considerably, and I spent many episodes of SPN with three rats hunkered down in my lap like so many furry, flat logs, happily being scritched by two people.

They are so spoiled and lazy and utterly adorable!

I am not sure Sam was ever in the first place able to afford a hybrid. He had better be on a scholarship at Stanford (!). Dean I reckon got his car through massive credit card fraud, so that one I'm not worried about. It's a pretty car, but it makes me want to go back to Angel and cling to the convertible.

(1) The show explicitly establishes that Sam is on scholarship and that his father more or less kicked him out when he insisted on going to college. (How Sam managed to have a coherent enough transcript to get a scholarship is best left unexamined.) So yeah, I'd assume no car.

He may have engaged in some kind of graft to get his laptop, though.

(2) Dean inherited the car from his dad. You can see 80s!John huddling with tot Dean and tiny Sam on its hood as they all watch the house burn down in the prologue in the pilot.

Terrified Dean is SO HYSTERICAL. I also like the one where they go back to Lawrence, KS because the (sadly stereotypical black auntie) guest star is so mean to him and his "WHAT? Why me?" looks are almost as funny as his panic attacks.

1. Yeah, I can't remember how much Stanford discounted student laptops when I was there. (It's been a while.) Maybe he won it in a raffle or something.

Also, frankly, the parking at Stanford is wretched. Practically everyone bikes. If the show miraculously reveals that Sam has a bike, especially one of the adorable folding bikes, then my respect for the writers will increase tenfold.

2. Gotcha. See, I have managed to wipe much of the pilot from my memory because I hated it so much. I presume that credit card fraud keeps Dean in maintenance and car insurance...

Really, I figured the main draws of the show for you would be the guns and knives and how much Dean likes setting things on fire. (Sometimes I wonder if the adolescent Winchesters fought over who got to set fire to the bones the way my sister and I used to fight over who got to light the Hannukah candles.)

Maybe that's part of it; I don't think I've seen all that many episodes involving setting bones on fire, which is something I approve of. (I don't know that much about the flammability of bones, gasoline or no, but given supernatural ritual I am actually willing to give this one a pass if it turns out to be weird physics.)

I WANT TO WATCH SUPERNATURAL NOW, DAMNIT! All the fannish talk has got me agog to see the prettiness that appears to be Dean. But I won't get my Amazon rental DVD for a week. *sniff*

And I confess to being very curious about the ahem for the Heroes episodes, because I doubt we're going to see the DVDs on this side of the Atlantic for at least a year. People have been saying good stuff about this show...

Oooh! I totally agree with your Heroes spec and now I'm having such an image of Peter falling back to Earth like in the Superman movie and being almost dead but then with Claire finding him so he can be healed. Just like the end of the first X-Men movie! This show is just so fun.

Someone in another blog, I can't remember where, suggested that perhaps Hiro will find his sword in a museum and won't actually have to battle a dinosaur, just a dinosaur model.

Well, "Hell House" and "Provenance" are great episodes for things being set on fire, but I'm not sure I should encourage you to watch anymore.

Really, he does comically tormented dignity so well. The thing with going over the bridge, in the pilot, where he ends up head-to-toe in river mud? Same deal.
