I've been really lazy about writing up the Italy trip... I sort of kept a little travel diary that now sounds a bit stupid, and I'm lazy, and I'd rather sit around and watch JoA instead of writing anything that even remotely requires thought. Maybe will just make a little trip webpage and stick in some photos too.
In other news, mailed off assorted packages today, so
yhlee and
knullabulla, your books should be arriving soon!
Also, guy from work who me and the boy have been going to occasional movies with says his friends have game nights every Thursday! I think I shall drag the boy there tomorrow and check it out. But, joy, other people who like board games! I live for dork companionship ^_^. And friend from college has moved to East Bay and is going to be working in Menlo Park, so I will get to see him more too! Yay, I might have a social life!
And I am thoroughly enjoying today, a free day in which I do not have to worry about job hunting or stress about my resume or worry that I will never get a job. *dances* Wow this feels good.
JoA 1x06 Bringeth It On
I'm so glad to have a show in which isn't too anvilicious and whose politics I agree with! Small things, like Helen arguing about the list of bad girls and why no one ever asked about the father, and Will's argument to not prosecute the girl like a criminal. And Adam's insistence that he wouldn't care if Joan abandoned the "subdefectives" to join the popular crowd, because both are labels, and he likes her.
Excuse me for a sec while I go wibble over Adam now. *wibbles*
Had a giant, giant grin on my face when he gave her the little cheerleading thing and starting banging his head because he had missed her try-outs.
I also nearly fell off the couch laughing during the Luke-Kevin moose conversation, and "Condoleezza Rice?"
I think right now my complete love of the characters is letting me get past some of the anvils because I enjoy watching the characters interact so much that I don't mind the sometimes heavy-handed preaching of the message of the week. I do sort of wish that the sort of hypocrisy of Grace abandoning Joan because Joan expressed an interest in cheerleading was pointed out a little more, because so far the show has been about not labeling people (invalid, science geek, parent, stoner) and has been about looking at them as individuals. So, yeah, I wish they would have a Cordelia-esque character. What I like most about the Joan stories is that they emphasize Buffy's message (esp. in Earshot), that high school sucks, and not only does it suck, it sucks for everyone. Like Kevin said in an earilier episode, they may look happy and popular, but they're all pretty miserable.
Also, Luke attempting to hit on Grace is very, very funny. Ahhh, science geek! How I love thee. But Friedman is annoying. I like Glynis though, and the fact that Joan, Glynis, and Grace all look normal and sort of awkward instead of being model-perfect. And more props to the new detective, who is not-white!
JoA 1x07 Death Be Not Whatever
I couldn't sob during this one because I was watching with the boy, and I am slightly embarrassed by this show's incredible ability to make me sniffle at the drop of a hat. And I was ok even through Joan talking with the kid in the graveyard (slight sniffles), and I started slightly leaking during her conversation with Adam. I loved her talk with Adam and the actor who plays Adam ... the slight sniffs, the unshed tears and unsteady voice even while trying to keep the conversation with Joan light-hearted. *sniffles* But the part that really got to me was the ending and Joan's anger with God, her having been shaken out of teenage complacency enough to question why the world was like that. And the show leaves things open enough with God's answers to satisfy me, because the point is having faith, not proof. The kid, btw, totally reminded me of Maisie in Connie Willis' Passage.
I also liked how the police storyline this ep was handled -- it was at a point in the beginning in which I didn't know which way the episode would swing, which is saying something.
And Father Parking Lot is back! Yay!
