Joan of Arcadia 1x03 Touch Move
Tue, Sep. 21st, 2004 10:53 pmI really do love this show. Oh dear.
"And I have a pimple growing in my ear!"
Hee!
I think I have a crush on Kevin too, which was completely cemented in his rather awkward talk with Joan on how everyone feels uncool in high school. Actually, that reminded me a bit of Earshot in Buffy, since
yhlee just watched and reported on it. I love Joan to pieces ("What, like, I'm supposed to take the blue pill?"), and I love that instead of having her start out as a social misfit like some shows do, she is a fairly typical pereson who tries really hard to fit in instead of being resigned to misfit-hood, and it takes her a while to try un-coolness. Laughed out loud many times, especially at the look on Adam's face when Joan started talking about the hotness of athletes. I really like how Adam looks real and not like a typical "cute guy," which I guess is part of the point. And I really love Grace, and the confrontation with Joan in the hallway. And I love Luke too, even though he hasn't had too much of a role yet. But he's a skinny geek, so I already have much stored up fondness for him.
But gah, hugest crush on Kevin! It's the big brother thing, I swear.
Added to that was the interesting portrayal of the psychic and how matter-of-fact she was, and religious tension in the Girardi household. And the poor priest in the parking lot makes a return! I felt very sorry for him and how flustered Helen made him. I very much enjoyed the fact that the show wasn't trying to make easy answers out of religion or faith or the like, given the premise, and how the episode was more about wanting and maybe needing to believe in something, as opposed to the actual question of the supernatural/miraculous. The God parts are a little preachy, but I can live with that with all the funny lines and the really good handling of Kevin's paralysis. I love how they will have the requisite awkward moments along with Kevin making jokes about himself: "My fight or flight instinct is kind of confused right now" (and his offer to roll over anyone who was annoying Joan). I was a little slower to like Helen (I think it may be a visceral reaction to her voice), but I really like her in her scenes with Kevin and her absolute determination to see it through, and the painful, desperate hope in her eyes.

Luke: Michael Welch (Played a younger version of Colonel Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) in the 'Stargate SG-1' episode, 'Fragile Balance.' His 'Joan of Arcadia' co-star Mary Steenburgen has been mentioned several times on that series as being O'Neill's heartthrob.)

Most of the other characters have been around a lot, and there are probably some other famous children I don’t know.
Shelley Long has been God once or twice.
