4x01-4x02 The Special

Yay! S4 of Spooks!

I am so glad that they began with Danny's funeral, especially with the repeat of Harry's words to Ruth: "There will be time to grieve later." And it's so sad that even at his funeral, Danny's family doesn't know what he did or how he died. Then, of course, the beepers go off, because there will never be enough time to grieve. I love that Ruth stays, despite the chorus of beepers.

I'm really glad that the waitress didn't turn out to be too stupid to live, although there were a few times when I was in doubt. I particularly loved her talking with Malcolm and Colin.

And eeee! Minority! I hope Zaf gets some good storylines.

I adored Ruth throughout this episode. I love her quiet attempts to interrogate the professor, how disgusted she is at his philosophy, her breaking finally and giving him a tongue-lashing. But most of all, I adore Ruth because she took the professor's concerns about his cat seriously and actually went back to make sure the cat was ok. Ruth is so awesome.

I'm also really happy about Julia what's-her-name; it's really nice to have an older, scheming woman on the show, particularly after Tessa left. I hope there will be more women, though sadly, Fiona was out of comission this episode. I do like how we see the emotional repercussions of Danny's death, but I wanted to see Fiona back in the field, particularly since she was introduced as someone even more fearless than Adam, almost.

Also, Adam! Gah! He is getting some cool stuff to do! I particularly loved the very tiny moment in which he tells himself, "I won't let this happen again. I won't let this happen again." Of course, being Adam, he immediately goes out after that and firebombs the guys. And I also loved the moment on the balcony; even though it was an accident, I totally wouldn't put it past him to do something like that. And it was just scary how quickly he turned it into something that could be used against the other guy. The scenes wtih the waitress were wonderful, Adam slowly turning back and holding her hands.

Then, the radio broadcast accusing MI5 of not doing enough. Ow.

4x03 Divided They Fall

I don't actually remember that much of this one, except that it is also very Adam-centric and that while I was glad Fiona was back, I was a bit irritated that she has now turned into person who cautions spy to not stick neck out too much. Putting that scene together with her stroking their kid's head was a little too much. I miss the Adam-Fiona dynamic from S3, in which she was taking the risks and being the daredevil. It was a much more interesting spin on the thing, and it brought out a side of Adam that we very rarely get to see on the show. Also, it was just a nice break from the pattern of "romantically involved woman attempts to dissuade spy from doing his duty," particularly after an entire season of Tom and Ellie.

Still not much of Zafar.

4x04 Road Trip

Continuing on the theme of not quite liking the new Adam-Fiona dynamic here...

Still not much of Zafar.

Was a bit bored by this one. It's not that it's a bad episode. It's still interesting and tense and etc., but it doesn't have the OMG WTF factor of the absolute best Spooks episodes. Also, I totally called Yazdi being an assassin.

I continue to adore Malcolm and Colin and their reminiscing on the good old days of bugging politicians.
