Today, I slept in and dragged my sister to meet
chi_zu and
coffeeandink for lunch at Cafe Lalo (apparently where You've Got Mail was filmed, but Mely said she found it before the movie came out, so she is allowed to keep going there). I was quite impressed that I did not have subway troubles, even though I abandoned my sister in the shower to try and get there on time.
Also, it was sunny today! Yay! It was quite lovely!
Within the first five seconds of meeting
chi_zu, I decided that I desperately coveted pretty much everything she was wearing. Including the glasses.
We got seated pretty quickly, and I ogled at the nearly pornographic display of cakes, pies, tarts, and other such goodies. Chi-zu and Mely each decided on what they were getting extremely quickly, but me and my sister dithered over the menu for quite some time, periodically surfacing to ask important clarifying questions ("What's gravlox?"). Thankfully, the decision to get a scone on the side was made quickly, but difficult choices had to be made about the ingredients of the meal (cannot have everything be too cheesy, cannot have too much of the same ingredient in everything, things must contrast a bit, etc.). When my sister and I eat together, we usually get two main courses and split them so that we can taste more things, and therefore, it requires a bit of coordination to maximize our menu possibilities.
In the end, we decided on quiche and a grilled swiss and tomato sandwich, although there was a brief moment of crisis when the waitress announced that the quiche was in fact not a gruyere and mushroom, mixed vegetable, spinach, leek, onion, and tomato quiche, but that all of the above were choices in quiche flavors.
We were all too full for the very lovely looking desserts, and instead of venturing out to assorted yarn and vintage stores as was originally planned, we ended up going to Bookoff. Well, I may have had something to do with that. Especially since it was so lovely outside and I didn't get to go yesterday!
On the way, we got sidetracked by Borders and Mely's local comic book store.
At last, we made it to Bookoff, but I will blog about that later, because it warrants an entry of its own. Also, I bought so much that I should leave that off to another entry just for space reasons (er, yes).
Later tonight, I went to Park Avenue Cafe with my sister and her friends for an early birthday celebration, since apparently they have this sort of "Pay Your Age" type system in which you can get an appetizer, main course, and dessert for about $26. There was much menu coordination again, but I ended up getting foie gras with rhubarb sauce, lobster salad with avocado and heirloom tomatoes and a peach and almond tart with peach ice cream and almond mousse for dessert. The tart was very, very good and peachy, and it reminded me of the peach preserves I had earlier with my scone during lunch. The foie gras wasn't seared like I thought it would be, but it was still good, and even a little fruity, thanks to the rhubarb. And the lobster salad was incredibly good, and some of the heirlooms were white! I had to fight the sister over the tomatoes, which were very good. Thankfully, one of her friends decided not to finish her salad (including the greens! Heresy!), so we finished that off as well.
The sister person got this very nice pasta with mushrooms and cheese (very nice and al dente), veal with peas (I lobbied for the veal on account of the peas), and this chocolate cube dessert, which was basically a giant chocolate cube filled with chocolate mousse and cake, along with chocolate ice cream. It was incredibly good, albeit a little difficult to get into at first.
And since we all tend to eat family style, I also got to sample tuna tartare, littleneck clams, rack of lamb (so good), mango lassi (really, really good and more like mango mousse type stuff layered over yogurt and wonderfully light), creme brulee, and figs with honey cream.
And now, we are going to watch a cheesy ice skating movie!
I am so full.
Also, I sit and pet my new stacks of manga.

Mon, Sep. 4th, 2006 12:13 pm (UTC)The Park Ave. Cafe sounds intriguing. I will have to check it out before I get any older!
It's funny that you were coveting my outfit because a) it was one of the tamer ones and b)I was totally coveting your eyelet trench! I tend to dress in themes or "costumes" without realizing it. I guess yesterday was what my idea of what a rich, upper west sider would wear to brunch. Hah! I was going to go with something more interesting or vintage-y just for you, but the habit of dressing for the occasion was too strong.
I had so much fun meeting you, Mely, and your sister yesterday! I hope you have fun the rest of your weekend.
