Wow, that was a hectic week!

However.....

You can still blog about racism! Truly, no one will descend upon you from high and say, "Nay! It is not International Blog Against Racism Week, and verily, you shall be smitten with flaming objects of DOOM for your heretical post!"

Or anything like that.

Obviously, no one needs permission from anyone, much less me, to blog about anything.

But I figured I'd put this out there as a bit of a reminder to people.

Me, I've still got to write up all the books on race and racism that I've read over the week, along with books by POC, along with posts on terminology, Taiwan, "But POC are racist too!" and assorted other things I think about along the way.

And I haven't even read all the posts written this week, much less commented.

It's IBAR Week II: The Sequel!

(Just when you thought it was safe to unthinkingly assume white privilege! *g*)

I have an inflammatory post planned for later this week: "Multiracial casting in Lord of the Rings: a thought experiment."

(Of course, everyone may be completely bored with my casting posts by now.)

second attempt, in which HTML actually works

I'm not! ^^

(Er. My other LJ is a Porsche [livejournal.com profile] umadoshi--which I feel a bit funny typing, since I just linked to my other-other journal in your post. >.> I swear I don't secretly have a whole army of journals.)

And sometimes I even close my html tags correctly, thereby making my comments legible.

I adore your casting posts--a depressing but illuminating glimpse into a world I really, truly know nothing about.

No, please go on! As [livejournal.com profile] oyceter says, they're v interesting and savvy about something which obviously affects my viewing, but which I don't think about that much.

....I love Cate Blanchett, but I didn't think Galadriel was _that_ blonde and fluffy. Could be utterly wrong, since I don't remember her actual physical description....

I recommend xD&D/d20's Sword of Flame Tongue +5 highly.

I am such a geek.

Too bad I do not have the energy or imagination to attempt a weekly IBARW webcomic featuring such weapons.

Or any webcomic featuring such weapons.

I have more stuff to talk about, and still no time to formulate a proper post, though I'll start the Mickey vs Gunn one tonight if I run out of words for fictional stuff.

While I was away at the weekend, I picked up a free copy of The Merchant's House (http://www.piatkus.co.uk/display.asp?type=book&isbn=0%207499%203699%201) by Kate Ellis (http://www.kateellis.co.uk/). Black detective moves from London to Devon ('the UK's whitest county' IIRC from a recent documentary) and has an entire series of mysteries to solve (I've ordered the next four while the publisher's got a sale on). The racism sub-plot of the first book hasn't been covered in as much detail as I was expecting from the reviews I read, but maybe that's to come in later books.

Just thought I'd mention the books here as well on my own LJ as I like the formula that Kate Ellis is set up (the mystery Wesley is investigating in each story (judging by the first book and the blurb for the others) is mirrored in some way by an archaeological mystery his friend Neil is researching) and I like the plotting and the characters, though the dialogue feels a little clunky in places.

Ooo, do write Mickey versus Gunn! It seemed to me that the way Mickey developed over the series bore similarities to Gunn's "I;m just the muscle" issues, only without the really icky element that social climbing is inauthentic and leads to disaster.

I'll definitely write it sometime soon, because I love them both, but used to feel guilty at being one of those people that complains about the lack of good Gunn stories without actually contributing any.

I like your parallel there too: something else to think about, thanks.

Hope you can find it at your end, and that you like it. (And if you do, there's a whole series to go at).
