Am doomed!
Sun, Feb. 26th, 2006 07:33 pmThe University of California Press is having a sale!
Of course this has to happen while I'm on a book-buying hiatus. I was going to note down everything that seemed interesting, but after I paged through the selection in Asian Studies, I realized I was pretty much doomed. Therefore, you can all assume that if the book has the words China, Japan, Taiwan, women, gender, sex, sexuality, popular culture or all of the above in the title, I was interested.
I was also happy to find some of my old EAS professors in there, even though I didn't like some of them.
I also wanted to point out that Gary Pflugfelder's Cartographies of Desire: Male-Male Sexuality in Japanese Discourse, 1600-1950 is "on sale" for $40 (the normal price is $55). I doubt anyone will get it, but I just wanted to rec it again as the best book I've read so far on the topic of male-male sexuality in Japan, especially since it covers the Meiji period and post-Meiji, instead of just the more popular Tokugawa period.
Also, Jennifer Robertson's Takarazuka: Sexual Politics and Popular Culture in Modern Japan is also on sale for $10, and I am seriously considering breaking the book-buying moratorium for it. It's on the all-female Takarazuka Revue, which has put on plays of Revolutionary Girl Utena and Rose of Versailles, among other things. And it's just a neat look at an all-female space and female desire and female cross-dressing, which seems to be rarer, given that there is a larger focus on the entire male-male sexuality thing.
