It is so strange being a part of fandom again. As you know, Bob, the second season of Veronica Mars premiered yesterday. I've been watching the first season by myself on Tivo and not really reading any episode commentary. I also haven't really been in a live fandom since the WB cancelled Angel (*shakes fist at the WB*).

Several people on my FL were watching VMars during the first season and doing commentary and pimping; even more people jumped on later. I don't personally know all that much about the fandom except for the more popular pairings and possibly the most popular (and most controversial?) character. It's a bit odd watching the show with this knowledge in the back of my head; I first got into Buffy and X-Files via fandom and fic, and so the shippiness of fandom wasn't so surprising or alien to me.

And here is where I confess that I got into X-Files because of Mulder/Scully fic and that I got into Buffy because of Spike and "Fool for Love."

I got into VMars because [livejournal.com profile] yhlee was evil and pimped mightily and told me about complex characters and storylines that considered things like racial and socio-economic tension. That's mostly still the reason why I'm watching; I also happened to adore Veronica mightily and passionately, with a protectiveness that makes absolutely no sense ;). But she's my girl anyway.

I also don't like Logan (*insert gasps of horror*). I don't know why. I think I had a rather emotional reaction in the pilot ep, where he is mean to Veronica; that, and his personal history, make him a frightening character to me. Generally I tend to find these types of characters extremely compelling, but for some reason, I don't find anything about Logan compelling. I have brief flashes of sympathy and I don't loathe the poor guy, but I don't quite seem to be fond of the character in the way I could be. Veronica, on the other hand, is also a not-always-nice, not-always-ethically-or-morally-wonderful character, but I love her in all her complexity, while Logan just doesn't seem to hook me in.

So I stare with befuddled confusion at Logan/Veronica shippers and read episode commentaries and get reminded of how long it's been since I've been in fandom.

Ok, I am making things up and sounding like it's been AGES since I've been in fandom, which is obviously not true, since Angel just ended, what, last year? two years ago? But it feels like a long time! And it's been a good four years since I've been dipping my toes into a new TV fandom, so there!

I actually have no idea where all this is going, but it was really weird getting up this morning and seeing all the VMars commentary on my FL! And actually going through and reading all of it! And the speculation, and the assorted shippers or non-shippers, and the opinions about various characters, and actually debating it in real time! It is quite odd.

Oyce, why are you always in my head? You have an uncanny knack of writing about the same things I'm thinking about.

I've actually been watching VM since the pilot, but only really became fanatic about it towards the second half of the season, and even then, I didn't really seek out outside commentary until the summer. The show gave me everything I needed. So I also feel like I've been out of fandom since Angel went off the air. Earlier in some ways, since I was without internet for a couple of years.

No point to this really, except to say that I continue to be intrigued by the almost unnerving similarity of our wavelengths. Freaky!

We get the first season over here starting from next week. I'm looking forward to it.
