Sigh. Still sick. Showed up at work for a few hours, and then went home instead of going to the departmental outing. Am grumpy because really wanted to go to said outing. Am also missing free food.

You can tell I'm not feeling well because I'm actually passing up on an opportunity for free food.

And now, memery!

What would be the top five clothing items you would like to own and wear - not contemporary, but historical or traditional fashion?

Oh this is hard! So many cool things!
  1. A corset. Probably Victorian or Edwardian style, and it probably wouldn't be something I wore often, but I just want one. I think it's the lace-up factor. And of course, I wouldn't wear it normally, but probably more as outerwear, haha.

  2. A kimono, complete with matching obi and proper undergarments, and the knowledge of how to wear it. Guuuuuh. Kimono. And obi!!

  3. A sari. Preferably a formal-looking one with lots of embroidery (do saris usually have embroidery??), and of course the knowledge of how to wear it. I just adore all the folds of cloth and the pretty pretty fabric.
  4. .
  5. A mid-1800's Victorian ballgown, complete with hoopskirts. Hee!

  6. A pretty fifties style outfit (ok, I already have one, but one is never enough!) with giant swinging skirts and those high, high heels, complete with gloves and a cute little vintage hat that perches. I find hats that perch really really cute. Am also going for fifties style instead of forties or twenties because dude, the fifties thing totally works if you've got hips (like me) and are slightly pear-shaped, which really doesn't quite work out with slinky flapper clothes, le sigh. It's ok! Because swingy skirts rock!

Five favorite things your rats do?

Only five? ;)
  1. Following my fingers around when they smell food, even though I'm not holding any food

  2. Fitz-rat's habit of totally blissing out and lying still with his eyes slit shut and ears back when I scritch them in the right spot

  3. Fool-rat's habit of trying to groom my hands by prodigiously licking them

  4. Fool-rat lying still when I nuzzle his tummy and then licking my fingers while he's lying on his back (cutest thing ever!)

  5. Corollary to the first point: both rats following my fingers around to the extend that they stand up on their hind feet and dance when I waggle my fingers around

List five things that get you excited/happy/enthusiastic about life, in no real order

Note that this list is leaving out big things like friends and books and LJ and family and all that.
  1. Getting a package in the mail, especially if it's an unexpected package from a friend!

  2. Finding that random book you've been searching for for years for a dollar at a random library sale

  3. One of those beautiful blue Californian days, with the slightest bit of breeze and gorgeous streaming sunshine, and the air smells like fresh cut grass and I can't think of anything outside of the moment because the moment is so good.

  4. Eating something like fried oyster sushi that sounds slightly dubious at first but turns out to be absolutely delicious and having that wonderful unexpected flavor explode in your mouth

  5. Lying in bed on a Saturday afternoon and basking in the feel of cool, soft, silky cotton sheets and knowing that I can go back to sleep if I want to because I don't have to go to work that day or the day after!

Little things make me happy.

Top five ratty mannerisms!

Good thing someone else asked, because I could never limit myself to just five! Ok, not really mannerisms. Oh well.

  1. The way the rats sleep piled up and curled up on top of each other, in a giant ratty furry bundle.

  2. Little twitchy pink noses and grabby pink paws and the way they poke out of the bars of the cage when the rats are hungry and waiting for me to feed them, or just glad to see me home.

  3. Fat furry rat tummies!

  4. The flat way they just lie there on the couch and veg.

  5. Rattie bruxing and eye boggling when they are all happy and furry and content and fuzzy!

Top five silly vids!

I don't actually know all that many silly vids, so sadly, this is rather limited =(.
  1. crazygrrl's Strange Disease - Funny Angelus vid! Angelus getting kicked in the nuts to the beat! Crazy dancing sequences! I love this vid to bits and pieces.

  2. Sisabet and Luminosity's Whatever - Oh come on, you must have seen this! Funniest. Thing. Ever. /comicbookguy Seriously though. I think I fell out of my chair when I watched this the first time.

  3. Sisabet's Cowboy - Ok, I'm not sure if this is technically a silly vid, but... it's about Angel being a pimp! Plus, I love that little jangly sepia bit during the bridge with historical Angelus stuff, which is absolutely brilliant.

  4. Brad deMoss' Episode I (sort of) - tee hee hee. It's the cutting. The cutting and the sound just work so well. And Pen-Pen as Jar Jar Binks!

  5. The Muppets' Mahna Mahna - Ok, ok, I cheat! But but, technically it is sort of a fanvid, since they're doing a cover of "Mahna Mahna," right? (come on, work with me here) Also, I didn't even know it was a cover, but it is, which makes it even better! Also, fuzzy pink alien things and rocker caveman dude.

Five favorite fruits:

  1. Watermelon, especially the cool part right up close to the rind where it's all crunchy and not too mushy or sweet, ice cold and juicy on a hot summer day

  2. Really ripe strawberries that put normal, not-so-ripe strawberries to shame with the fresh berry flavor, red right up to the stem instead of fading slightly to white like most do.

  3. Ripe white peaches, large and dripping juice that run down your elbows, so good that you almost don't need to bite into them to know how good they taste because that peachy fragrance is already wafting up toward your nose.

  4. Ponkan oranges around New Year in Taiwan, with the soggy, ugly loose skin hiding the absolutely juiciest and sweetest oranges ever, even more so than mandarins and satsumas, so fat that I can eat the bits of pulp one by one and not at all sour

  5. Cherries, yum yum yum. I once got to go to a cherry orchard when we visited Hokkaido and we all just wandered around eating as much as we could possibly pick and spitting out the seeds wherever. I felt a little sick later because I ate so much, but, oh, they were so good!

  6. Wah, can think of a dozen more fruits that I love....

And now I cheat and make you guys comment even more! Muahaha!

"List two (or more, I guess) fictional characters from books or TV shows and I'll give you my take on the relationship (whether friendship-family or romantic) between them. And I saw someone else do this at the time and it was fun: feel free to include characters even if you don't think I know the source material, and we can see how much I've picked up through fannish osmosis."

Okay, I give up, and have to ask: in musical terms what the heck is a "cover"?

Pairing(s): Oooh. Brandin of Ygrath and Dianora from Tigana.

Failing that, Angel and Connor.

In the interests of promoting historical fashion, you might want to check out this saturday's sf opera costume sale

As to corsetry, have you ever gotten a chance to wear one? I ask, because I own both a waist cinch and a corset. Karen also has a corset. If we ever all once again meet (currently, I'm just glad to over my cold enough to talk again), I'll try to remember to bring them.

I love, love, love my waist cinch from Stormy Leathers in SOMA. Best clothing purchase I've ever made. Not cheap, but if you divide the cost by the number of times I've worn it, it cost me pennies. Love it! Ahem. Actually, if you're thinking of a corset/cinch someday as outerwear, a black leather one, well, it'll go with a wide range of outfits. Although, the real fun of corsetrey is the out-of-bodice feeling when you take it off. Ahhhh....

As to a hoop skirt, try shopping in the Haight. There's a fabric store that sells hoops for pretty good prices.

And you're right, you can't have enough 50s style dresses. They are really quite flattering in a hide, reveal sort of way. So, hats, gloves, do you have a favorite hat/gloves pairing?

What? It's a ship!
