Tue, May. 3rd, 2005 11:12 amSummer! It is now officially summer because I went to Safeway yesterday in a jean skirt and sandals and got white corn! White corn! Finally, the season of good veggies and stone fruits is here!
I abuse exclamation points profusely.
Also, it's only summer because I got white corn, heh. Why yes, Bob, the universe does indeed revolve around me. Well, at least I wish it did.
Updates on my life, which is pretty much of interest only to me. Which is why, of course, I am posting this for everyone to see.
Knitting is progressing. I seamed on the first sleeve to the hooded sweater, and now there's only one more sleeve and the hood to go! And then more seaming. I haven't done much of it, and I've already decided that seaming really sucks. Then maybe I'll knit up some pockets for it, because jackets without pockets (or pants without pockets) annoy me. My poor mother will be the unlucky recipient of this first unshapely mess ;).
I told my sister I wanted knitting needles for my birthday, and I swear she looked at me like I was nuts. I can't tell, because it was on the phone, but it was still funny. But, but! It's the interchangeable circulars! No more scrambling around for the right sizes!
The pink scarf unfortunately hasn't been worked on much at all. But today is the semi-monthly knitting group, which means I get to sit around in a cute cafe with nice people and knit and chat for two hours. And since we take over the cafe's table, it means I am morally obligated to treat myself to raspberry cheesecake. Mmmm, cheesecake. Mmmm, cheesecake with raspberry topping and chocolate crumb crust. Someday I shall venture over there when it's not night time so I can try out their interesting espresso drinks. They have one honey and wasabi latte (called Fire on Mt. Fuji, hee) and a mocha with curry powder. I really want to taste them, but I go there after work, and I already have way too much caffeine in my system by then.
My sister has got herself an apartment in NYC! Yay sister! Of course I am sad because it means she won't be in California, which means I can't drag her out and make her play with me, but then I get to visit her in New York! I miss NY. Not that I ever lived there, but I miss it anyway. Oh well. I shall work on persuading her roommate to move to CA, hee. Mostly I am trying to persuade everyone I know to move to CA, because I love California and living in the Bay Area, and I'm pretty much resigned to living here for forever. The only other place I can currently imagine living is Taiwan, which has the distinct disadvantage of having no really good English bookstores with all the completely random books that I want to read. So if I ever move there, I want to be really super rich so I can order stuff off Amazon and have international shipping. Of course, the possibility of my becoming really super rich is slim to none. Looks like the Bay Area is stuck with me.
I really do love it here though, even though the weather for the past few months has been more San Francisco than anything else. I love the weather, I love the sun, I love the dry heat, I love the green winters, I love the tech companies and the different restaurants and the food culture and the racial mixing. I especially love the casualness and my little apartment next to the library and the parks and my bitty city street, which is eminently pedestrian friendly, with a really good gelato place to boot.
The rats are just as funny and furry as ever. I'm ever amazed that I haven't frightened
fannishly off with my weird pet behavior. I go around the apartment carting the poor fuzzy guys around saying, "Fuzz fuzz fuzz fuzz fuzz!" and other supremely inane things. And then I torture them and turn them on their backs so I can nuzzle their fuzzy little tummies. Yesterday when I did that Fool-rat started licking me on the nose instead of pushing himself away with his little paws! At least
fannishly hasn't heard me singing my stupid rat songs yet, or her regard for my intelligence levels would go way down!
Book-wise, things are still progressing slowly. Mostly this is because I am distracted by knitting and Battlestar Galactica and I can't seem to find something I like now. I think I'm in the mood for romances, but I can't find any romances I want to read, grrr, argh. At least I got the newest Loretta Chase from the library, which makes me very happy! Also, Angel Sanctuary continues to eat my brain. I am deeply entranced by the Mad Hatter, who has an awesome character design and I want to dig up a Japanese version because I want to see how he speaks in Japanese! I've got the Madeleine Robins alterna-Regency sitting around, but my brain isn't up to handling historical pastiche, which is why I haven't been trying the Heyers sitting on my shelf. I seem to be in a fluff mood right now. Strangely, I think I was on a romance reading spree around this time last year as well, which stopped mid-July when I started the Lymond books. It's going to be really fun tracking books next year and seeing if any discernable patterns come out.
I continue to adore my local library, which is lovely and comfy, and just a block away! Joy!
Currently in the middle of Lynn Kerstan's Dangerous (something or the other), just because it was sitting on the new shelf. So far I haven't felt an overwhelming desire to throw it against a wall, which is a good sign! My genre, I love you, I do, but you frequently make me want to tear my hair out.
I seem to have stalled out on non-fiction again, which is why it takes me months to finish just one book. Oh well. I read very capriciously.
In conclusion, I spilled coffee on my shirt. *headdesk*
