Well, technically it's not yet your birthday in my time, but it is in your time, so that's really all that counts!

I'm sort of very late with the why so-and-so is cool meme, but I figured it would be a very good time to start with you today.

I don't even remember when I started hearing about you on LJ -- possibly via [livejournal.com profile] mutant_allies -- but I soon realized that for insightful Buffy and Angel episode commentaries, I should drop by your LJ. Then I found out you read books. And wrote about them. In great detail, with intelligence. And that you were about a hundred times more well-read than me, which meant that you had really great recs. I can blame you for a good percentage of my book purchases in the past years or so, and they have always been well worth it. I've already said it about a dozen times before, but your LJ was the one that has been inspiring me to try to log and post about the books I have read because I've gotten so much out of your posts that I wanted to contribute in some small way to that. And if that wasn't enough, you would be cool just because you read romance novels and analyze them and think about gender dynamics and gender roles! I *heart* your big, shiny brain so very much.

I've had incredible fun watching you venture into the world of anime and manga, and your posts always bring a fresh perspective. Plus, I've found that I really shouldn't read them when I'm in the process of drinking or eating, because you have the cruel tendency to bury absolutely hilarious sentences in the midst of great analysis and cause me to snorfle. I love your incisive humor. I also love how enthusiastic you are about the things you love, from the current fall into anime and manga to fannish passions, ballads, Sondheim musicals, and more.

More than that, you've been a wonderful friend who has been helping me through some pretty tough times, and I can't thank you enough for that. I hold you in incredibly high regard, and because you choose your words so carefully, they weigh that much more -- a very long way to say that all the comments you have been making mean a lot to me!

And everyone else is invited to post (in comments or in their own LJs) on why Mely is so cool and to wish her a very happy birthday!

I'd post in mine, but I don't think she'd see it there.

I don't really know Melymbrosia in that I don't comment much and mostly just read. But I always love what she has to say and has one of my favorite ljs to read. So thoughtful and intelligent and interested in the same weird array of things I am.

So happy birthday mely! Thanks for writing your thoughts down and sharing them with the rest of us.

I can't say anything else, because you've said it all! What a great tribute to Mely, and it's all true.

Hey, I already posted about how cool she is. But it bears repeating. She's very cool.

Happy birthday!

You are so sweet! This is going into the private Memory category for things to cheer me up when I am feeling down. :)

Thank you so much.
