oyceter: Stack of books with text "mmm... books!" (mmm books)

I really like my nice new hardcover with gorgeously colored glossy pages. Mmm. I waited till the graphic novel came out because the individual issues were so expensive!

Anyhow, meet Silver Age Marvel superheroes in the year 1602. Queen Elizabeth is dying of consumption, there are strange portents in the skies, and apparently, the world is coming to an end. I think I am familiar enough with the Marvelverse in general that I could catch most of Gaiman's fun with his Elizabethan counterpart, but I suspect I may have msised some stuff. But I do figure that I am enough of a non-fan as well that his tampering with the universe doesn't bother me in any way.

It's also nowhere near the scope of Sandman, but then again, het really trying to write another Sandman. I liked it... it was fun and I enjoyed playing "Where's Waldo" with all the characters (Black Widow! Whoo!), but I don't think it was much more than that. I don't find anything really sticking to me, but that's not always a bad thing.

The art for both the covers and the interiors is gorgeous. I especially love the technique for the covers -- the artist used scratchboards or something, and then later colored them in on the computer, so it looks very old and stiff and nifty.
