I ended up watching a lot of JoA today because the boy was watching the latest episode of the Apprentice, which basically makes me want to run around, hit Donald Trump on the head with a giant stick, hit all the contestants on the head with a giant stick, and then bash my head into a wall.

This is why I don't watch reality TV -- I can't stand all the people on the shows, because it's like they're all there to win (duh), and so everyone is back-stabby and passes the blame around, and there's all this conflict, and it drives me absolutely up the wall. I am very conflict-avoidant. I don't like reading through kerfuffles, I don't like even being in the same vicinity of flame wars, none of it. It just makes me really nervous and tense, and I can't stand it. This is probably a very good reason as to why I suck at interviewing.

Anyhow, so after an hour watching all the people on the Apprentice be stupid and mean and petty, I needed to watch something happier with people who were essentially good at heart and tried to do the right thing instead of save their own skins.

What gets me about the so-called reality shows is that ten minutes of watching and you know it's not even real--there's somebody telling them either how to react, or to react big, "make it sexy, make it edgy, make it almost X" etc. It's all fake, the people speaking in the banal language of everyday, barely communicative, their body language intensely aware of the camera and their subtle movement competition for that camera's eye.

Yes, that too! You can just tell all these people are hamming it up for the camera, and it makes them look stupid and, argh!

Sorry. Reality shows piss me off very easily.

Yes, yes, yes! All the reasons why I DESPISE reality TV. Back-stabbing and public humiliation and pettiness. To be fair, I don't deal well with competitiveness in general -- I don't watch sports -- but reality TV brings a whole new low.

OTOH, I don't mind kerfuffles as long as they're eventually resolved with a minimum of hard feelings. I think we get some really interesting issues raised, and as long as the tone remains respectful, more debate than flame war, I like watching and even participating in the kinds of "intellectual arguments" we often see on LJ.

But agree that Trump needs to be hit on the head with a giant stick. You wanna give it a go? *g*

Gah, yes. That's why I generally don't cheer for people in sports and the like. The only sort of reality TV that looked interesting were these British programs (1900 House, 1949 House or something) in which they take a family and put them in a house and make them live like people in that time. But then, it's more like a documentary because there's no winning or anything.

Kerfuffles -- it depends on the tone. If it is actually a respectful debate, yeah, I'm for that (though sometimes I still get nervous posting because I don't deal well with conflict), but when they degenerate into name-calling and the like, it drives me batty.

I am so with you. *HATE* confrontation, *HATE* kerfuffles, CANNOT understand people who thrive on such stuff as entertainment.

It just makes me tense and nervous and uncomfortable.

Yeah. I feel almost allergic to it, and I completely don't deal well with it.
