The bad: Stupid me forgot different states may go by different banking rules, so while I can get foreign currency on the spot at the local bank back in NJ, I have to call in ahead of time here. Doh. Will probably have to get money in airport now.

But mostly the day is going well, despite my stupidity.

find an atm. You get your best exchange rate at an atm versus an airport forex kiosk.

Yeah, that's what I did before, but I think I'm still going to end up getting some currency at the airport just so I don't turn up in England empty handed.

If I recall correctly, there are both ATMs and kiosks at Heathrow (though the kiosks, temptingly, come first). The rates are definitely better at the ATMs, and even the ATMs are inside the arrival terminal, so there's really no need to get cash sooner than that.
