I watched fireworks!! Wow! The last time I was in the States for Independence Day was... I dunno, at least five years ago. So it was a bit strange -- I kept wondering why everyone was waving little flags until I remembered I was here on the 4th of July and that people here celebrated. The last time I saw a 4th of July celebration was, strangely, when I was in Okinawa freshman year... one of my friends had an aunt who worked at the army base there, so we were on the base on the 4th, and they set off fireworks.
I also saw Spiderman 2. First things first: Harry Osbourne has my dagger!! I saw it on the screen and nearly poked a hole in the boy's ribs with my elbow.
I liked the movie (and deliberately did not think of all the strange science), but I don't know... It didn't quite gel the way the first one did for me. I also think I'll like the third one the best, because betrayal! Angst! Hee hee.
And while it was not eye-stabbingly bad, I was still irked at all the damsel in distress stuff. Someday there will be a superhero movie in which the girl does not have to get rescued all the time, and it will be good. Catwoman, unfortunately, does not look like that movie (first, they changed her name!!). I remain quite fond of the characters, but wanted to spend more time with them interacting instead of pyrotechnics action stuff. And I was sort of ticking off all the superhero cliches being pulled out -- big secret, heavy-handed hero references, etc. It was done well, but it wasn't to the point of transcending the genre. I do understand that not everything has to, but it would have been interesting (and less cliche-laden). I think one of my favorite parts was Spiderman holding the building off Mary Jane and just sort of gently saying, "This is heavy."
That's the thing -- I really do like the characters a lot, particularly Peter Parker. But because of that, I sort of wanted to see them talking more and more little interactions, which I suppose doesn't go so well in a summer movie.
