Witchblade, Deluxe Collector's Edition
Sun, May. 23rd, 2004 10:36 pmIt looks like the first few issues of Witchblade, detailing how Sara Pezzini, a cop, finds the Witchblade. Origin story.
I picked it up mostly because the art is shiny, and I'm a sucker for pretty girls in spiky armor apparently. The art's pretty typical of mid-nineties (I think?) comic art -- very manga influenced, clean lines and computer colors, with big eyes and lips. I've been flipping through a good deal of comic books in the store to look up online, and I've figured out that I don't really like seventies style, really hate eighties style (everyone looks sort of grungy and the faces are all sort of droopy) and really like this manga-esque style. Granted, it's not really manga-esque at all, despite the fact that everyone calls it that -- but I like the simplified lines and the strong colors.
Anyhow. The Witchblade is some sort of glove that chooses its wearer and can transform into armor. It also appears to be sentient.
The story of the comic, unfortunately, is rather boring. Mostly I was in it for the pretty shots of Sara. Ian Nottingham (pseudo-samurai-ish character) seemed sort of interesting, but alas, the comic cuts off before more interesting plot developments. It didn't really manage to hook me, so I don't think I'll pick up other ones, unless highly recommended.
The thing I did like was that the Witchblade apparently picks only women to bear it (her?). There was one bit in which the guy who had it before shows Sara a gallery of all sorts of historical figures he thought had the Witchblade -- Joan of Arc, etc. Sounded sort of Tales of the Slayer-like to me ^_^. Anyway, if they have a compilation of past people who've worn the Witchblade, I think I would read that.
