The Vampire Diaries 1x14-1x16
Sun, Apr. 4th, 2010 11:06 pmSpoilers are getting much less teenage girl id-like!
...which is not to demean the teenage girl id, especially coming from someone who just reread the Anne Bishop Black Jewels trilogy this weekend.
But I am super excited that the show is getting some things that appeal to my now-non-teenage-girl id!
The episode before the long break was great, although I am sad they killed off yet another Black woman. Doubly so because it's Sheila! I wanted much more Sheila-Bonnie bonding time. On the other hand, I love all the reveals about Anna and Pearl, and I was incredibly happy to see them back in town, as I had thought they were well out of the picture now.
Also, is the actress playing Bonnie temporarily out for a reason?
I was rather hesitant about where the show was taking Damon in the previous few episodes, as I do not think an overwhelming love for Katherine justifies everything Damon has done ever. And I meanly rolled my eyes a bit at Damon when he found out Katherine wasn't in the tomb. Elena! Don't comfort him! Thankfully, Damon reverts to being his old jerk self very quickly, losing Elena's sympathy and thereby making him much more tolerable and much, much more fun to watch. I don't think I can take yet another unrepentant mass murderer vampire redeemed through the power of love storyline.
I am also warming to Elena and Stefan, who are much cuter now that they're an established couple, rather than doing the dramatic fall into forbidden love. I especially liked how Elena lost sympathy for Damon even as Stefan was trying to protect him; familial vampire bonds as a means to sympathy and/or redemption work so much better on me now than romantic ones.
The reveal about Elena's mother being Isobel was a surprise to no one watching the show, but again, I liked how it drove a wedge between Elena and Damon. And Isobel's friend! And the mysterious guy getting himself run over! And possible connections with Katherine? And Damon being brutal on screen and killing Alaric! And then Alaric not actually being dead because of Isobel! I love this show the more it goes into backstory and tangled histories, and even if it stops here, I feel it's already built a universe much more compelling than that of the books.
I still enjoy the Caroline/Matt storyline despite it taking away from vampire stuff, mostly because I have a secret fondness for shallow female characters suddenly having to stretch a bit. And I loved the inarticulate declaration of like from Matt in the red sports car.
I rolled my eyes at Matt's mom and the whole highly sexualized, irresponsible women thing running in his family, and yes, I am still not happy about Vicki's storyline. At least now Jeremy seems to remember her. That said, Matt and Caroline catching Kelly and Damon making out = comedy gold!
And finally, the bits that had me squeeing: Pearl and Anna! AWESOME. Pearl vs. Damon! Even more awesome! I am even more curious now if they are supposed to be part Asian, since Pearl seems to have been made around the 1400s? Or 1600s. I can't remember if she's 400 years older than Damon, or just 400 years old. I am so glad they have her so brutally violent; I think if they had her seducing people like Katherine, I would have rolled my eyes forever. Plus: wooden spoon!
The gender role reversal of the female vampire and the guy flirting with her/with danger made me happy enough to overlook Jeremy's boringness, though I still have no idea what Anna sees in him. I suppose it is like what all those centuries old vampire guys see in sixteen-year-old teenage girls, coupled with the deep vampire longing to attend high school.
I am really looking forward to learning more about the secret council, Isobel, Katherine, and Pearl.
