I remember reading someone on my FL reviewing a movie or TV show of the Scarlet Pimpernel. Just remembered, want to get from Netflix, except there are three versions...
I have seen most of the Scarlett Pimpernel movies.
1. The Leslie Howard Black and White original is pretty good. Co-stars Merle Oberon as Marguerite. And Howard is perfect as Percy Blakney/Pimpernel. Doesn't use the disquises as much. Does follow the first portion of Baroness Orzy's book pretty well.
2. Anthony Andrews/Jane Seymore/Ian McKellan version is just plain fun. Andrews was great as Blakney and the romance between him and Seymore worked. Not sure McKellan/Seymore affair worked nearly as well...but I happen to adore McKellan. It's 1980s.
3. Richard Knight (?) Can't remember the actors name, but he's the only one who played it with black hair, I think. Not bad. Did a bunch of BBC movies that aired on A&E. Elizabeth McGovern wasn't that great as Marguerite though, she lacked the bite and fiestiness of Seymore and Oberon. She was the low point in that version. But the disquises and twists are great.
If you want romance? Go for Anthony Andrews/Jane Seymore. Old movie daring and supberb acting - close to writers intent - Leslie Howard. Twists and turns serial - Richard E. Grant (that's the name I think.)
cortese has been talking about them lately, because Jamie Bamber (Archie from Hornblower fandom, Apollo from the new BSG miniseries, one of the guys from Band of Brothers) plays one of the little sidekicks... Tony Dewhurst.

Not sure that helps at all.
