Heroes 1x05 Hiro's
Thu, Oct. 26th, 2006 12:47 amAhhh future!Hiro, you are so serious and portentous! Having just come off of watching entirely too much Fullmetal Alchemist, I mostly just wanted to yell at people for not sharing information:
"Why? What's going to happen?"
"Everything," says future!Hiro in a deep, dark voice. Dun-dun-DUN!
One would think if you came from the future, you'd at least come with a script of something useful like: "After blah blah happened the cheerleader died and Sylar ate her brains and NYC blew up which is why we are all doomed!" I feel like that would be somewhat more covincing.
Anyway. The show is still operating on a level of superhero comics, imho. There are some really cool parts, like the stopping of time on the train, or Flying Congressman leaping into the sky, or Boring Talent Stealing Brother's eyes turning white (Byakugan!) and painting maniacally. And then there are parts that just make me want to roll my eyes, like Flying Congressman telling Niki that she's the kind of woman a guy would spend the rest of his life with, or pretty much everything involving Telepathic Cop. And, of course, evil black guy is Niki's husband. Sigh. I was hoping that wouldn't be the case, but oh well.
Re: Telepathic Cop. Why is it that everyone in this show who sees a gun decides to pick it up? Have they no common sense?
On the other hand, Brother meeting Isaac was really cool, despite the stupid testosterone postering about Simone. And I could still watch the Hiro and Ando show forever, particularly at the diner. And Hiro approaching Flying Congressman. Hee!
And I continue to love Claire and how she says what she did was wrong as well, despite her creepy dad having erased the guy's memories. I am now hoping even more that Claire doesn't turn out to be victim-girl-who-must-be-saved, particularly if she must be saved by manly men.
I am largely cynical because I'm not sure if the show is doing anything with gender politics or even thinking about them.
On the other hand, Hiro finally gets a reply to his phone calls! And they end on yet another cliffhanger, which means yes, I will still be watching next week.
I sound more down on this show than I actually am; I love moments in which I get to stare at the screen, like when the entire train paused. I just want more of those and less of stupid marriage disputes or whatever.

Well, it's Hiro. He probably feels a sense of obligation to the cliches. I mean, you just know at some point between now and then he was all "and a KATANA!" and everyone else was all "um..." and he was all "...cause it's COOL! I should have a KATANA!"

Thu, Oct. 26th, 2006 05:07 pm (UTC)I have been informed elsewhere online that Niki's husband DL and the memory-erasing guy are actually two different people. I was confused as well, as they are a) both bald black guys b) who never appear together c) don't speak d) lurk in shadows. But judging from the previews, DL's power is actually phasing a la Kitty Pryde, not erasing memories. I still suspect that he is not evil, as I think Ikin did the murders that he was blamed for.
The telepathic cop's marriage still bores me, although I did like the scene in the convenience store. The gun thing was dumb, although I will moderately fanwank it as his brain getting fried on telepathy overload.
I am starting to like, or at least be interested in, Evil Flying Congressman and Power-Stealing Brother. They are both better interacting with people other than each other.
On the other hand, Mohinder needs to get something to do, right away.

Thu, Oct. 26th, 2006 07:31 pm (UTC)So very true. Skepticism gets boring pretty fast, especially when the audience is all on board the "go, heroes, go!" train.

Thu, Oct. 26th, 2006 08:30 pm (UTC)I totally forgot to mention all the great parts in the diner, from "Waffles! Eee!" (totally something I would say) to "No, using your powers for your personal gain is the Dark Side!"
He probably was thinking that he had to be all mysterious and etc.

Thu, Oct. 26th, 2006 08:32 pm (UTC)When I thought he was Bennett's companion, I was totally groaning about her husband being evil, but now that I know he's not, I am quite sure that Ikin will turn out to be the evil killer person in the end.

Thu, Oct. 26th, 2006 08:36 pm (UTC)Mohinder definitely needs plot.
I am very glad that Niki's husband and memory-erasing guy are two different people. They didn't have distinctive hairstyles for me to figure out! I keep mixing the brothers up as well, even though they really don't look alike, just because they both have short brown hair.
