Wiscon Day 1

I went to
heresluck's famers' market OMG SQUEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!
Will give full report in a few paragraphs, but just had to get that out of the way.
So I managed to find my way to the hotel safely without doing things like getting on the wrong bus, and I found my room. And then I realized I had no idea where anyone was or how to contact them. I wandered down, registered, rifled through the multitude of pamphlets in utter confusion, then headed back up to my room and flopped down on the bed in sheer terror.
Then I figured I would check the message board, so I went down again, got my messages, wandered around again in utter confusion, then headed back up to the room and sat there in sheer terror.
Then I realized I was hungry. I wandered outside of the hotel, also in sheer terror, managed to procure some food (only had granola for lunch, stomach was not happy), dropped by the opening ceremony, where I hoped to find someone I knew. Sadly, there was a great mass of people, my feet hurt, I was hungry, and, to top it all off, I couldn't find anyone, so (of course) I wandered back up and sat in the room and ate my salad (in sheer terror).
Then I was still hungry, so I went to the Broad Universe party, since I figured I should introduce myself to the person buying my reviews. I did, and promptly ran out of things to say (in sheer terror), ate a lot of very good cheese with quince paste, and felt extremely embarrassed about simply standing around people who all knew each other and eating their cheese.
I mean, since it was free cheese, I ate it anyway, but I felt bad about it.
So I wandered out (in sheer terror), saw
oracne, and
yhlee thankfully came to my rescue in the lobby. People I knew! And then we saw
coffeeandink, to whom I basically glued myself for the rest of the night, which greatly alleviated the sheer terror. This was a good thing.
We crashed
coffeeandink's room for the air con, and I met
renenet,
heresluck, and
truepenny (very briefly), and I was rational for most of the time (hopefully), except a few moments of unadultered, incoherent squeeing about the insanity of Yuki Kaori's newest manga (fairies stalked by a serial killer) and Minekura Kazuya.
And then there was a panel on James Tiptree, Jr., but I forgot my paper and didn't take any notes. I want to read Julie Phillips' new biography of her though.
After that, there was some party-going, in which
coffeeandink actually talked to people! The exclamation point isn't that I am surprised that she talks to people, because obviously she does, but that I haven't yet got up the courage to talk to anyone outside of the very few LJ people I know. So if you see me and I'm just standing there and saying nothing, it's because I'm gawking in sheer terror and haven't figured out how to say anything that doesn't make me sound utterly stupid.
Also, parties are excellent because they gave me free cheesecake and vegetables and chocolate, and already I've seen loads and loads of books I want to buy. Saw
adrian_turtle,
desayunoencama,
buymeaclue and probably other people who I don't remember, sorry!
After which, I stumbled off to bed to get up at an insane hour of the morning -- 6:30, which, by the way, is 4:30 California time. This was not helped by the fact that I didn't fall asleep till three because I'm still on West Coast time.
I seem to have gone on for too long, so the farmers' market post will have to wait for a bit...
