So. I have now come to the conclusion that my rats are totally and completely domesticated and lack all ratty instincts. Of course, one would already surmise this when Fitz-rat made his exciting break for freedom, and then promptly gave it up and stood on his hind legs for his favorite yogurt drops.

However, even more embarrassingly, I gave them peas today. They adore peas. I didn't even make the clicky sound that usually means "I have food, run my way." Fitz-rat can smell the food, and he was very excited. But instead of actually, say, following his keen ratty nose toward the peas on the sofa, he kept running toward me and sniffing at my fingers. Apparently, now I have wired his poor little brain to think that food smell for him = food from my fingers, and even when there is food nearby not with my fingers, he will still run at my fingers.

Wow. I didn't even try to train them and they did it themselves! Poor confused little ratties.
