Mon, Jan. 3rd, 2005 06:30 pmWell, my vacation is now over, and I'm in an airport once again. I'm already feeling horribly homesick, and I suspect this is just going to get worse for a while before it gets better. Everyone reading this must be so sick of how I routinely experience crushing homesickness every time I leave my parents or sister, but, well, it's a pretty constant pattern by now.
To sort of cheer myself up, a list of many food items I have had in my week and a bit here... I have eaten xiao long bao (small pork bao with a sort of soup inside, steamed, with very thin skin) three times (twice at Gao Ji, once at Din Tai Fong), vegetable dumplings, red bean paste bao, really good chicken noodle soup Chinese style (the chicken has been in the soup/stock for hours and doesn't taste so good, but mmmmm, the soup! And the noodles are that perfect consistency, just a little bit softer than al dente to be very QQ/chewy). And steamed water dumplings (shue jiao), these beef rolls with scallion that I haven't had for forever and really love (the slight taste of sauce is so good). I've also had a giant seafood dinner with steamed fish sprinkled with green onions and ginger and a soy sauce and oil sauce, steamed taro with dried scallop bits on top (so good), a ton of lobster and crab (steamed, stir-fried and baked), this sort of caviar pressed in cakes and sliced, eaten with slices of radish and green onion (really interesting and tasty combination of extreme seafood-y saltiness and the fresh, watery crisp of radish), giant baked prawns, platters of steamed shrimp with heads on (best way to go), slightly cooked scallop, enough to be perfectly tender, and loads and loads of sashimi.
Street food wise I have had candied strawberries on a stick, these little egg cakes (freshly made and piping hot with a crispy outside and soft inside), hot grass jelly with all sorts of sweet beans and chewy tapioca bits, a ton of honey-lemon juice because I was sick, zhua bing (sort of like scallion pancakes, without the scallion, again, fresh off the griddle), strawberry shaved ice (the boy thought I was nuts, because it was really cold that day, but it was really good).
I have also had roasted chestnuts, a ton of chocolate, lots of oranges (the ugly kind that taste like giant satsumas, but sweeter), fresh strawberries because amazingly, it's strawberry season here, and oh my, they are so sweet and juicy and not at all sour, and lien wu and dates and guava and freshly squeezed orange juice. It's amazing I haven't gained ten pounds already. It's also vaguely embarrassing that I keep track of everything I eat ;).

Mon, Jan. 3rd, 2005 05:06 am (UTC)Glad you had the chance to visit, and good wishes for a safe journey home.
(..I miss my sisters too.. very much. Kristen who has been a friend too for over twenty years now, and Julianne who is only twenty five and the same distance in age as me and my Mom so she is like a sister and daughter and friend all rolled into one. I miss then but in an odd way it is a comfort just knowing they are there, unlike a lot of things that flux and flow they are constant.)

Thu, Jan. 6th, 2005 07:38 am (UTC)(*hugs* back.. I've been busy already trying to search online to get a good set of references bookmarked before I have to start drawing on them. But mainly it's the level of writing I'm concerned w/. I can brush up a bit but I won't really know for sure what's expected until I have to start submitting.)
