I continue to enjoy this series, although the violence level gets to me sometimes. Strangely, I find that I have become very sensitive to violence. And while the violence in the book is not stupid violence, it still gets to me. It is senseless violence (not "Let's stick in people blowing things up for fun!" senseless, "I have a point to make" senseless), and Vaughan understands this.
I think one of my favorite moments, though small, was when he had the Russian girl speaking horrible English, as per all the stereotypes, switch to perfectly fluent Russian and admit her English was crap. I get sort of irked when all the foreigners in books and movie talk with bad grammar, even though I know it applies (witness, my mom), because no one much acknowledges how stupid people sound speaking Japanese or Russian or Chinese, etc. Because having the characters speak pidgin English makes them automatically sound less intelligent, while they may be geniuses in their own tongue, and I liked having that acknowledged. I mean, I sound like a complete idiot in Chinese and Japanese. I do sort of wish that he had 355's Russian be pretty bad, though.
And then I cheered when it was confirmed that Dr. Mann was Chinese-Japanese. Yay! Asian character! I think the only Asian characters I have seen in comics so far are Jubilee, assorted ninjas and others possessing strange and mystical martial arts prowess. I wasn't sure if she was Asian or not -- Guerra's art is abstract enough that Mann could have been either Caucasian or Asian. Also, her surname threw me off.
I also liked that Yorick continues to be an idiot at times and an all-around normal guy.
However, having the astronauts perish seemed an authorial trick to keep Yorick special. And I growled out loud at 355's "I love Yorick!" thing, and they had better not make that true, because argh.
