Black & White, ep. 14-18
Thu, Aug. 20th, 2009 01:33 amWoe! Leaving Taiwan in a few hours; so not ready for vacation to be over. On the plus side, California will have much better weather...
Spoilers have more drama tropes!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Chen Zai Tian and Chen Ling are siblings OF COURSE! Right now, my guess is that Chen Ling is not her father's actual daughter, thereby enabling the romance between the two and circumventing incest.
Mostly: BWAHAHAHAHAHA SECRET SIBLINGS!
In other news, they keep killing off women! I should be more surprised, but given the genre, I am so not. Also, as per usual, the women who kickass are evil. I do wish they'd give Chen Ling more to do in terms of action, though I am glad that she at least got a gun at some point and helped plan her father's jail break.
And oh dear to all the drama between Chen Ling, Chen Zai Tian, and Ying Xiong! I keep sympathizing with Ying Xiong over Chen Zai Tian, even when the writing is clearly making Ying Xiong unsympathetic. His angst is so much more understandable than Chen Zai Tian's! Well, part of it is probably because Mark Zhao is a much better actor than Zai Zai, unfortunately. And I found the duty vs. friends a much more compelling dilemma than I usually do, given Ying Xiong's characterization and the way he really gets the brunt of it when he returns to the police station. Chen Zai Tian being asked to investigate something for the section chief seems to be rubbing salt in the wound, even though Ying Xiong currently doesn't know about it.
Oh! Also, I can't believe I didn't mention it when it first came up, but I would have howled with laughter over the whole "Super Sekrit Assassin Army of People Whose Emotions Have Been Surgically Removed" thing. Which means we have hit lobotomies, secret incest, and entire face reconstruction. All we now need is amnesia!
Sadly, the mob boss coughing seems to have actually been allergies like he said, not cancer like my dad and I were guessing. His is a delicate cough, not a blood-spewing one like Andy Lau's in Running Out of Time.
The plot currently makes no sense, as the writers seem to be following the Gundam school of adding in as many factions as possible. Thankfully, at least most people stay on the same side once you figure out if they're an informer or not. And people conveniently do things like not call in a missing gun or putting something in a safe and not locking it to further the plot.
I am also a little sad that Lan Xi Ying doesn't seem to have much to do now that Ying Xiong has hooked up with Evil Female Cop, even if the actress is a little bit wooden. I was warming up to her! Possibly she will come back in the next few episodes.
In conclusion: only missing amnesia!
Also, how is the director's drama White Tower compared to this and Mars? This I am mostly watching for the crack, the shiny production values, and Mark Zhao being intense and hot; Mars I really loved.
