Entertain me!

Why I love manga, #1:

[edited to correct my bad spelling and other grammar stuff)
Mely: DINOSAURS!
Oyce: I know! I want more dinosaurs! Why is there not a giant subgenre of dinosaur manga?
M: I was so disappointed when they turned out to be metaphorical dinosaurs. I thought the series was going to be about human reincarnations of dinosaur scientists who set up a moonbase.
O: OMG! It so should have been!
M: Well, there is the mpreg human-looking dinosaurs live among us series, but I never got past v1.
O: O_o
O: Wow.
O: And I thought Sex Pistols was the only mpreg human-looking animals living among us series out there.
M: In retrospect, that was somewhat naive of you.
O: Truly, it was.

Why I love manga, #2:

Several of us thinking Nobuta wo Produce was a shounen-sports-take manga on a boy working with all his might to restore a grocery store, when in actuality it is a shoujo-Pygmalion manga drama.

Suddenly, the "wo Produce" part of the title makes that much more sense ("wo" signifies an object, so it is "Producing Nobuta" sort of a la producing a movie).

Still, I am sad there are no random cabbages or other vegetables of DOOM.

Why I love manga, #3:

RAISED BY PIGEONS!

(Yes! The pigeons still amuse me!)

Your turn! Tell me what has entertained you today!

I know! I'm kinda sad now that it's not a RESTORE THE FAMILY GROCERY SHOP manga!

I ran across a reference today in a book I'm reading that I intend to post about. It's called The Haunted: A Social History of Ghosts and is by an academic who's analyzing the last 500 years of ghost reportings in the UK through the viewpoint of social trends and suchlike - it's not about whether they're real or not. It's really good so far.

Anyway, he's talking about ghost hunters in this one section and mentions in passing of the Cornish folklorist William Henry Paynter who zipped about the country in the 1940s investigating hauntings with the Prince Birabongse Bhanubandh, in the Prince's sports car.

IS THAT NOT GENIUS? And it's REAL! It only requires a missing eye and a severed head to be a manga!

As I was saying to [livejournal.com profile] telophase over in her journal, this is totally an Emma fanfic, in which the Indian prince and the protagonist (during one of the occasions he is Tragically Separated from Emma) go tooling around the country investigating hauntings *from the back of an elephant*.

And then the hauntings turn out to have been the prince's retinue of dancing girls all along, because they get really, really bored during all the times they aren't appearing out of nowhere to traumatize stuffy British people.

Nobuta wo Produce is actually a drama, not a manga

What entertained me today?

The live action of Nodame Cantabile has filled me with girlish glee. Cracktastic hijinks! Classical music! The retina burning hotness of Tamaki Hiroshi! Did I mention the classical music? The end credits are set to "Rhapsody in Blue."

There is a real lack of menacing vegetables in manga. I'm rather disappointed in the lack of produce in Nobuta wo Produce.

Is Tamaki Hiroshi playing Chiaki? In which case: eye-burning hotness indeed.

NwP has many, many redeeming qualities though. It's well-acted, and... generally wonderful.

When I'm having a bad/long/harrowing day, I entertain myself by searching YouTube for Takarazuka clips.

Today was a good find, an otokoyaku being "priestly" and then being pawed up by the forces of darkness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmK_rVSHitE). Heee.

I accidentally left some mushrooms at Yoon's place yesterday, and emailed her to eat them before they went bad. I suggested sauteeing them with the garlic I also accidentally left there.

She replied, "So that's where the garlic came from! I had thought Heero might have teleported it in as a distraction."

Qwan...where a little boy who eats demons keeps trying to eat a little girl raised by demons but who isn't and is Very Determined that he gets to eat her...yet they end up a mass collision of cute.

And avatar...Avatar is basically GOOD amerimanga...

Eventually, I'm going to finish 20th Century Boys, find some way to buy the entire set in English, so I can recommend it to people. How is it so good?

Eyeshield 21. I hate football in real life, but I freaking adore this series--it's a typical sports manga, I suppose, but the characters get me every time. There are two volumes that made me a bit uncomfortable (an American coach prejudiced against black and Japanese players), but other than that I'm feeling nothing but love.

Skip Beat! is the shoujo title that currently owns my heart. One of the big things I love about the series is the strong female friendship between Kyoko and Moko, and the fact that men have nothing to do with their initial rivalry, or their eventual friendship. They don't even talk about men until volume nine!

I remain entertained by the poetry of Herrick. I mean, his poetry beyond the 17th centruy tentacle porn.

This entertained me today rather than yesterday, but I discovered some of us still own our early 90s comic books. Some of which were drawn by Rob Liefeld. THE SHAME. (http://magicnoire.livejournal.com/191482.html)
