Am doomed!

The University of California Press is having a sale!

Of course this has to happen while I'm on a book-buying hiatus. I was going to note down everything that seemed interesting, but after I paged through the selection in Asian Studies, I realized I was pretty much doomed. Therefore, you can all assume that if the book has the words China, Japan, Taiwan, women, gender, sex, sexuality, popular culture or all of the above in the title, I was interested.

I was also happy to find some of my old EAS professors in there, even though I didn't like some of them.

I also wanted to point out that Gary Pflugfelder's Cartographies of Desire: Male-Male Sexuality in Japanese Discourse, 1600-1950 is "on sale" for $40 (the normal price is $55). I doubt anyone will get it, but I just wanted to rec it again as the best book I've read so far on the topic of male-male sexuality in Japan, especially since it covers the Meiji period and post-Meiji, instead of just the more popular Tokugawa period.

Also, Jennifer Robertson's Takarazuka: Sexual Politics and Popular Culture in Modern Japan is also on sale for $10, and I am seriously considering breaking the book-buying moratorium for it. It's on the all-female Takarazuka Revue, which has put on plays of Revolutionary Girl Utena and Rose of Versailles, among other things. And it's just a neat look at an all-female space and female desire and female cross-dressing, which seems to be rarer, given that there is a larger focus on the entire male-male sexuality thing.

OH MY GOD TAKARAZUKA BOOK. My college library has it and I adore it and despaired of ever finding it for a none bank-breaking price. Aaaieee! I wish I had more book recs although that would bad because then I would buy more and then I would be POOR.

And now I see the Takarazuka book is $19.95 at Amazon as well. Am idiot. But I am tempted by the $40 homosexuality book also.

OH GOD I wanna see a performance too! I have a few tiny random MP3s and video clips and I am in love. I think if I had the opportunity I would totally become one of the intensely devoted fanwomen the book speaks of. It is such an interesting book! I'm getting that one, definitely, even if I talk myself out of the $40 book.

...you're not helping. Research! Research for future.....Japanese stuff!

SendSpace was being really nice to me last night, so: video clips and music!

"Luck Be A Lady" from Guys & Dolls 180MB (huge!)
Trailer of Elizabeth 18MB
ZIP of random MP3s 21MB ("Yami ga Hirogaru" = ♥♥♥)
This is all of my tiny collection. I snagged most of it from [livejournal.com profile] takarazuka, which I haven't checked in a while but has links to shiny things.

You should get it! It has really interesting things to say about constructed gender roles and female Japanese fandom (and their handwriting!) and has pictures and is totally related to shojo manga!

I apologize for sounding like some weird lurker, but is there any way I could convince/beg/bribe you to upload "Yami Ga Hirogaru" again? I won't be getting my copy of Elisabeth for a few more months and I'm already going through withdrawals! *weeps*

I live to serve! I apologize for the delay.

Do you have any Takarazuka files that you'd recommend? Sadly, what I listed is all I have.
