Yazawa Ai - Nana, vol. 16-17 (orig. Jap.)
I also reread vol. 16 with the Viz translation, so I am more clear on what's going on in that volume.
Spoilers are lost
We learn more about Nana O's mysterious past! Tsuzuki Mai finds out about Nana and Nana's half sister and takes on the name of Uehara Misato to get closer to Nana, creating the self-fulfilling prophecy that it is a name that will be close to Nana. I... am still unsure of what to think of Nana's mother. Actual!Misato and her brother seem to be cute, and I think Actual!Misato is especially cute when fangirling Nana.
But things continue to fall apart, and volume 17 has Nana K (Nana I?) musing that even though it's New Year's, it's actually the beginning of the end. Oh no! I'm so glad we get to see a living Nana O in the beginning of volume 16, or I would be terrified of the outcome. At least she's alive, even though she's completely separated from the rest of them.
In the future, we've seen Nana K, Nana O, Nobu, Shin, Yasu, and Satsuki. They've mentioned Ren and Takumi, but we haven't seen them yet. I very much hope that Reira is all right, and I wonder what happens to Miu? I am guessing that Nobu has broken up with Yuri/Asami, and it's clear he still carries a torch for Nana K.
I am so worried!
I continue to find the Search subplots boring, and they're particularly annoying because they talk a lot, which means a lot of Japanese for me to read. Still, I'm glad we finally get the gist of Nana's background, including Misato/Mai's role in it. I'm also guessing that the Tsuzuki family will find its way into the manga soon.
Other than that: I continue to tolerate Takumi and occasionally continue to loathe him, particularly when Nana K complains about not having him around. True, it is his job, but he could at least call! And not have an affair (affairs? I would not put it past him)... And then I go "awwwww" when he finally visits sick Reira, even though they are the two I least want together.
And oh, Reira. Give things up for Trapnest, but don't give them up for Takumi's dream and pretend that it's for Trapnest.
And then there's news of Nana O's mother hitting Search, and Nana K rushes back to see her. And she and Nobu have made the first tentative steps toward breaking the ice again, and oh, I love Nobu hiding around the corner and making up his mind that being scared of talking to Nana K is less important than reassuring her and Nana O alike. I still have serious reservations about his actions regarding Yuri, but oh, that scene reminded me why I love Nobu so much.
Then he gets his own story! And it fits, the simultaneous kindness along with the unconscious arrogance that comes out of his privilege, the way he both alienates and attracts Nana and Ren. And heh, of course he was like that with girls even back then.
