I swear, bookblogging to come after this.

I'm still cautiously happy about the election results (Secret Service, please be awesome), but goddamn, I am so disappointed about Prop 8. Again, I don't think marriage should be the be-all-end-all of GLBT activism, but just... argh! Constitution change! Legal precedents! Taking away rights in the state constitution!

On a side note, if you're going to talk about API campaigners for Prop 8, please also take note of all the API groups that stood up against it as well.

I don't think marriage rights are the sum total of GLBT issues either, but since it was the only specifically GLBT issue on the ballot in CA this election, I think the spotlight on it is indicative of that rather than anyone's feelings or lack of same on other GLBT issues.

What does API stand for?

Oooooh, okay that post now makes a lot more sense.

Can I stand up for Mormons, while we're here? Because I'm not Mormon but dude, not all Mormons are like that.

Thank you.

Thank you for that reminder.

You have every right to be touchy about it, especially given the many posts I've seen complaining about the "Samoan protesters" and...urgh.

And I'm pissed about the POC organizations that were against Prop. 8 and how much the campaign ended up being a textbook "stuff white people like" situation.

My white lesbian roommate has all this amazing stuff to say about how marriage equality benefits POC and poor people (in terms of health care, survivor's benefits, tax benefits, etc. etc) and yet the mainstream LGBT movement keeps on presenting this as a "rich white gays get to spend lots of money on marriages" situation. GRGH.

Or the fact that the API for 8 were bankrolled by Mormons...

Yeah, and some of us campaigned against it, too.

So pissing, I can't believe Prop 8 passed. Perhaps it's because I worked in the business end of health care for so long but marriage equality is more than just being able to say one has a spouse, when it comes to health care that shit is gold --- it really can become a life or death situation.

I've been rather unhappy about this one. I think there are some major problems that caused what happened this week but the key is to just continue the fight in other ways.

I think this represents how, while the GLBT community has moral standing, that in itself does not equality make. In a country where there is majority rule, you can't just follow your moral compass.

The civil war is what freed the slaves, rather than the other way around.
