Heroes 1x19 .07%

EEEEEEE! Heroes is back!!!! And still awesome!

EEEEEEE! Where to start, where to start?

I'm still wanting more from the DL/Niki/Jessica/Micah storyline; it looks like it's really going to heat up in the next few episodes though. That said, ouch to Jessica's "You just can't get work because you're a black ex-con." I mean, given today's society, probably true, but still, ouch! At least someone is pointing out the stereotype DL is on the surface. Beneath the surface, though, I really like that he's the warm parental figure for Micah right now while Jessica is the dangerous fun one; it's a nice inversion of the threatening black man and the motherly white woman. And oh, of course I should have known that even Jessica wouldn't have brought Micah to Linderman.

Mr. Bennet teams up with Matt and Ted! Awesome! Ted can do EMPs! Even more awesome! Look Ted! You can do things other than kill people! Also, I love that they stop at Charlie's diner and that Matt has information that Mr. Bennet doesn't. And I totally cracked up at Matt's glee: "You're just some schlub! You're middle management!" That kicks ass and hearkens back toward Matt's quite probably resentment of middle management in the LAPD.

And, oh, Claire. She's just getting tossed around, isn't she? The Haitian seems to have faded back into the background again; I'm hoping he'll show up, finally with his own agenda, not as a pawn of Mr. Bennet's or as a henchman for Mrs. Petrelli. Though I'm curious to see what Mrs. Petrelli's power is...

And Peter! Hair slicked back, hee! I was wondering why his regenerative powers didn't kick in earlier; I didn't think about the glass shard still being in there, just like Claire and the twig. Her pulling it out and the entire staging of the scene reminded me of Sleeping Beauty waking from a hundred-year sleep when the thorn is pulled out, uh, if Sleeping Beauty were a young modern white guy. And the prince were a blonde cheerleader.

Claire just looked so heartbroken when Nathan said he couldn't bring her out, not now.

Mohinder! Eep! I hope he destroyed the List as forethought! Also, haha, apparently he has now joined the SPN cabal of women on the ceiling, though thankfully, he never got set on fire. And poor guy, being shooed out of the Petrelli household before he could even meet Claire. He knows about Claire, right? For some reason, I remember Mr. Bennet telling him.

And oh... Isaac. I really liked you even though I know other people thought you were sort of boring. You were cute once you got clean and interesting when you weren't in the Love Triangle of DOOM. Clearly it is a Love Triangle of DOOM, as two of the sides have now died (of course, both of them are the POC, wargh). But I'm glad you got to be a hero even then. Also, I am really hoping that one of the things that Hiro and Ando have to do to stop the bomb is to bring you back. Wait. Aren't Isaac and Simone in Peter's future-vision of the bomb going off? The show isn't going pull a giant timeskip backwards, is it? That would be so cool!

I loved his moments at the beginning and the Asian (?) geek guy (yay more POC random casting, boo potential stereotype). I am totally fanwanking the potential stereotype to say that Asian geek guy is so enthusiastic about Hiro because he is an Asian geek and loves comics and never sees himself represented there and therefore loves Ninth Wonders even more because of that. So there. Neener.

But yes, I was watching and realizing that we're circling back to the pilot, Hiro and Isaac, the gun on the floor, Hiro too late once again. And maybe too late many more times to come. I really really really do hope that the key to stopping the bomb is keeping Isaac alive; it would be nice to have less dead POC.

Also, can I say just how much this keeps reminding me of anime and manga?! Linderman wants to destroy the world so he can save it! And he grows plants! Clearly he is Fuuma! And there is a timeskip! Ok, obviously this all applies to western comics too. But I love how you can tell the creators are such comics geeks; we're getting flashbacks and AUs and visions of things to prevent all over the place and it is awesome!

And finally: FUTURE HIRO SQUEEEEE! OMG TIMESKIP ARC SQUEE!

Class notes: not much that I can think of, except that the lower class (non-middle class? lower-middle class?) cabal of Matt and Ted have met up with the dreaded Middle Management. *snork* And that Jessica reads as more upper-middle class than Niki does, because hey, yay illegal income and snazzy clothes.

Gender notes: Alas, not much with gender. Though I'm glad more and more of the women are finally meeting and making contact; it's still very clearly a guy's world out there, with one woman among a crowd of men in nearly all the locations. Also, [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro's had qualms about hyper-competent manly-man future Hiro and what it say about what you have to be to be a hero (gruff and macho and male); I'm hoping things play out differently in the next episode, but I'm not sure they will.

Race notes:See above re: death of Isaac. Siiiiiiigh. DL and Mohinder didn't have much to do this episode either, though possibly Micah will have big things to do next ep. And of course we have rich white man being elected. I fanwank and say Linderman manipulated this because rich white men have a much larger chance to win, except it's in Isaac's paintings too.

ETA: Oh! And I meant to note that there was a cool conversation in the comments of my Heroes and race post in which people were wondering who was the protagonist, and I was skippy happy because Hiro is obviously the protagonist of Isaac's comic book. Hee.

It was particularly mean of Jessica to make the "black ex-con" remark, because she's the reason he's an ex-con! (She killed the guys, he took the blame; I know DL was involved in the Linderman gang before that, but it all sounded more like something he got mixed up in (possibly via Jessica) than something he was doing as a career.) That being said, I too liked that they put it out there as a very real obstacle for him, rather than never mentioning it.

In real life being a cop in LA isn't a working class job, it pays quite well; that being said, on the show Matt is certainly not upper class. Maybe barely middle and struggling.

I think Linderman wants Micah to pull a Diebold on the ballots.

See my post for extensive theories on Hiro, Isaac, and the future.

I hate to say this, but D.L. was an ex-con BEFORE Jessica came along In "Six Months Ago," Niki mentioned that D.L. was having a hard time getting a job because he's an ex-con.

I fanwank and say Linderman manipulated this because rich white men have a much larger chance to win, except it's in Isaac's paintings too.

Have you seen the online comics? It seems Linderman may be rigging the election and Wireless/Hanna is out to stop it. Also, the fact that Sylar painted the same angry-President-Petrelli painting is weird. Why that? Does it mean he'll go after Nathan next? And how does that complicate the bomb plot?

I need more episodes today!

Did you watch the preview for next week's episode/consider it a spoiler?

[identity profile] shati.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
*facepalm* Can I blame my lack of brainpower on Sylar?

Anyway, given the light the promo paints this future in, I'm now wondering if future!Hiro is supposed to be more heroic. It's the dark AU, and future Nathan and Peter in particular are giving me very bad vibes. So now I'm hopeful -- I don't want Hiro to lose the bubbly enthusiasm, I just want him to get some practicality to complement it, and next week's episode is what apparently what happens if they fail. Not if they succeed.

That, and the two Hiros are together in the same room, which I totally did not foresee. And present!Hiro is the more immediately sympathetic of the two.

OMG.

(Also, this is my favorite description ever:

Her pulling it out and the entire staging of the scene reminded me of Sleeping Beauty waking from a hundred-year sleep when the thorn is pulled out, uh, if Sleeping Beauty were a young modern white guy. And the prince were a blonde cheerleader.

Claire is Utena!)

I hope this isn't a repeat of the SGA POC = cats debate of DOOM... but if Hiro is Yuzuriha, Ando could be Inuki.

I suspect that future!Hiro will never replace our!Hiro, but only pop up occasionally to be cool and make pronouncements of DOOM.

Also... what do you want to bet that eventually we'll see other alternate Hiros? There could be evil!Hiro (assuming that soul-patch!Hiro isn't evil.) Salaryman!Hiro. Rock star!Hiro. Crazy vigilante!Hiro. Really, the AU possibilities are endless.

assuming that soul-patch!Hiro isn't evil

Oh my God, you're right, he has facial hair! He's totally evil. And Hiro will know it! ...or, no, I don't suppose that particular convention necessarily carries over to Japanese popular culture. But he's familiar enough with American pop culture that I wouldn't be surprised if he made a reference to it.

Linderman wants to destroy the world so he can save it! And he grows plants! Clearly he is Fuuma! I am glad I am not the only person to make a X/1999 reference. Good thing I find it an interesting perspective.

Loved your thoughts on the show and I can't wait til next week! Future!Hiro is going to be awesome.

I finally saw Heroes! I had to go through a day of lectures knowing that it was waiting for me.

Re: Linderman, I'm glad that I'm not the only person who thought that most of New York dying =/= the end of the world.

I wouldn't mind Isaac dying if they brought Simone back and had her have a few of her own storylines.

If Micah's grandmother was brought back, and was a first generation Hero, I'd take back everything I've said about this show.

Micah and Linderman
I have a feeling Linderman does not really grasp what a deep level of shit he's just gotten himself into by messing with the lioness' cub. Also, since Micah can tell Jessica from Niki even when Jess is attempting to act like Niki, I wonder if he could tell it was ShapeshifterGal and not either of 'his mom'? Either she's a better actor than Jessica by far, or Micah's got some kind of deep game running.

Mama Petrelli
I really, really liked her speech to Claire about why Paris, why now, and why it's so important. The "you need to get your head straight and I need to tell you things so you can decide if you're going to CHOOOSE to involve yourself ... the way I did" speech. Quite possibly the most feminist thing this entire show has had in it to date. And alas, we're going to timeskip forward for next ep instead of seeing them in Paris! Argh.

And I totally cracked up at Matt's glee: "You're just some schlub! You're middle management!"

I was HOWLING at that point. IT'S SO TRUE. Power is relative. Heh.

I was so psyched, in a twisted way, when I saw that the glass had gone into the back of Peter's head -- I was all "That's what happened to Claire! Claire will know how to fix it!" And then she did! And, like you, I was all over the revisionist Sleeping Beauty aspects of it all, and their conversation afterwards: he saved her, and she saved him right back.

I agree that it would be cool if saving Isaac turned out to be a prereq for saving the world, but Isaac himself seems not to think so; he appears to be quite at peace with his fate and to feel that he's set the right things in motion with his final issue of Ninth Wonders. Plus... I'm inclined to see Hiro's encounter with Charlie as having some bearing on the current situation: he's learned that there are some events he can't change, some people he just can't save. He has to figure out what he CAN do.
