Alias 3x16 Taken

Read with caution (i.e. I have unpopular opinions re: a ton of stuff in Alias)

ETA: Spoilers for future episodes in the comments...

Wow. Barnett is very stupid. "I thought you had changed!" Dude. It's evil Uncle Arvin.

However, I am quite pleased that we seem to have returned to the Alias of old, in which they had spy missions and double-crossing and Rambaldi, as opposed to the Sydney and Vaughn furrowed brows and the Love of Doom! And smart Jack!

Although now I feel bad for Lauren and I'm scared they're going to kill her now. Sigh. I want my girl still there!

I was also pleased about the focus on Dixon, because I like him and I think he's interesting. But I do have a bit of a problem with Sydney's whole tactic of negotiate with the terrorists and how they sort of painted Senator Reed as being wrong about his thing. I don't know. I've never had a satisfactory answer to this, because whenever the heroes of shows do this (Buffy, etc), I want to argue about risking the greater good. But then, when they make decisions like Angel and Wes re: the individual, that is also problematic. I do, however, appreciate shows that wrestle with the issue instead of just outright going, Screw the greater good! Get the kids back!

On the promo: *gag* Stupid Vaughn. Sorry. I have gone all out with the bashing in my head, mostly about his wishy-washiness and his apparent inability to stay faithful to a single woman, be it Alice or Sydney or Lauren! Ugh. It's kind of like: Oh Alice, I love you! But I also lust after my coworker Sydney. Oh, but I cannot have Sydney, so I'll date you again, Alice! Oh wait, Sydney's available, I'm going to kiss her in the rubble and promptly dump you!

Then: "Oh Sydney, I love you! But you've been dead for six months. Oh Lauren, I love you and let's get married even though I'm still (probably) mourning my old girlfriend!"

Now: "Oh Lauren, I love you! But my old girlfriend is back from the dead, and I send her longing gazes. Oh, but we've already been married two whole years and I can't possibly commit for that long, so I'll just kiss Sydney. Now we aren't working out, sorry, too bad, let's break up."

My first reaction: "Kill Vaughn!"

You know, I feel kind of bad that I'm so negative, but it just annoys me so much!

dude. I'm so a member of the Shovel Vaughn! Club

I even made icons about it! They're somewhere in my icon memories....

But Yeah. I only like Vaughn when he's getting hurt or nearly on the edge of the mortal coil. My motto is if he's not broke...STAB HIM AGAIN! AGAIN!

And yes, I'm right there with you about the Lauren worry, especially in light of the new spoilers about the later episode arc for this season. Do you know what it is?

But hey...the girl has lines she draws. She's not over the edge of evil, as Sark seems to be gleefully about. There is ....a sliver of hope, seeing how this episode seemed to focus a lot on fathers and fatherhood and responsibility and how Lauren definitely did not have a good relationship with her father and seemed embarrassed of him, at times.

So even if Jack knows...I don't think he's going to get her outright immediately - I think Senator Reed will be involved first, and then there's going to be ISSUES...

and in a completely, completely shallow note...Lauren was very pretty tonight.

Lauren may be unpopular (I can't get behind a character who announces that she is working in her incarnation of agent of evil by wearing black eyeliner, no matter how good it looks) but I agree that Vaughan is mighty annoying.

Also, I'm wondering if lj-cut works in the comment section because your girl with the horns in the icon spoiled me. Yes, she had 'spoilers spoilers spoilers' in the heading of her comment, but that is so hard to miss as her comments weren't.

Anyway, hugs to you. It's good that *somebody* likes Lauren's lisping black mascara-rocking person. Not enough love being in the world and all.

I apologize....

I should have deleted my comment right after I posted it.

Yep, you should have. But you did! So maybe nobody else will be spoiled, so that's a good thing, right?

And anyway, it's not like my purpose in life is to go unspoiled or that you have transgressed against me as a person or humanity in general...

psst. those icons...

Its this whole big movement (http://www.livejournal.com/users/crushw_eyeliner/191523.html)

I just found a Sark/Lauren fic that I might not entirely hate. The world is good.

the Lauren/Sark fic

is located here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/hillaryr/8759.html#cutid1)

and if you want to check out my spoilers ridden post about Alias, including that Plot Point and Lauren's fate...

;)

I agree with you...

Having the same problems with Alias. I don't like Vaughn.
I find Sydney bland but tolerable. I watch it for everyone else. And I did like this episode better than last weeks, probably because we saw so little of Vaughn and much more of Jack, Sloan, Lauren, Dixon and Sark.

Right now - my biggest problem with the show may be that I think I've figured it out so can more or less predict where they are going. I'm unspoiled by the way. So this is speculation: but here's what I think they are going to do with Lauren/Sark/Vaughn and Syd.

Lauren is going to get pregnant and either leave the baby with Vaughn or disappear pregnant. The question will not be who the father is, but rather who the father and mother are. Syd's eggs - Sark probably got them. He may have impregnanted Lauren. Vaughn is going to be left thinking she has his kid. And voila - Vaughn is in Jack's place with Irina all those years ago.

That's my prediction. Vaughn will find out she's a double-agent, she'll reveal she's pregnant, disappear. Chase is on to get the baby, which will later be revealed to be Syd and Rambaldi's biological daughter.

The thing about Alias - is it's not a BTVS or ATS or even a STarGate SG-1, it's pure action/adventure thriller, with focus on thriller. Not too much character development. Just enough to get you to care. The characters serve the situation as opposed to the situation serving the characters. Not too much mythos, just enough to give heighten the tension or give the characters something to chase and an air of mystery to the proceedings. Pretty formulaic.

Really for me the highlight was Syd getting collared by Sark! Now that moment had some sizzle to it as opposed to endless eyes of angst Sydney is doomed to eternally exchange with Vaughn.
