Buffy 7x20 Touched

Ha! Finally got Touched!

I am so confused!

Are we supposed to think Buffy's right and that everyone sucked for kicking her out? Because there was the bit in the beginning where no one is getting anything done because of the democracy until Faith basically acts like Buffy. And I had problems with this because I felt Buffy doing her whole "I am the law" and not listening to anyone else's opinion was a bad thing. They also had Spike do his entire spiel on how they were all traitors who turned against Buffy, and much as I love Spike, I felt as though his view was definitely being influenced by the fact that he was completely in love with her. Then Faith (I thought) did a pretty good job leading the girls after the entire Kennedy smackdown -- she listened to them, delegated, seemed like she even organized a way for everyone to speak their mind.

I like how Buffy's actions are coming back to the Conversations with Dead People bit with Holden, how she admits that she was deliberately distancing herself not only from the girls, but from everyone, how she's been trying NOT to feel connected (ties back to Willow's speech on connectedness in Lessons!). I still think that her entire "I am the law" stance is a result of this distancing and that it IS a bad thing. I don't like that Faith feels as though she has to do that as well. I also didn't like how Faith of course led the girls by accident into an awful situation while Buffy by herself found the magical weapon thing (how exactly is that supposed to hurt the First? Will it make the First corporeal or something?). Are we supposed to think that Buffy works best on her own, because I don't buy that after the many seasons emphasizing the Scoobies and Buffy's ties to the human world. Is it supposed to be a kind of fallback to Becoming 2, in which she knows she's the only one left and the only one she can ultimately rely on?

I admit, my little Spuffy heart nearly burst! I lovedlovedloved the Spike/Buffy scenes! And even as a S/B shipper, when I read parts of the summary, I thought it was going to be too cheesy, or that it would suck, or just that somehow, Spike's character just didn't do it for me anymore, because I haven't been reacting very much to the Spike bits, even in LMPTM. But it was beautiful and sounded like Spike! Reminded me of those wonderful moments late S5 and early S6 (pre-Smashed) where the two would just sit and Spike would be strangely honest and heartfelt. I loved how he called her on the entire "unattainable" thing, and I didn't feel as though he were just blindly supporting her. I felt like he did think she was doing the bad distancing thing (maybe Spike didn't like General!Buffy either? Not clear here) and that he basically chewed her out for not letting herself feel connected to other people and also for doing the entire pity party/give up thing as well. I loved the references to Lover's Walk and the Gift in that for Spike, it's always about the blood. I loved how he admitted to being not the most rational person, because, hey, Spike! Never the most rational person about love. I loved how he tried to get her back on her feet again, told her she wasn't someone who should give up, although I was iffier about him telling Buffy that everything was falling apart without her. I think in the end though, both Spike and Buffy realized things weren't just falling apart without her, and that that was OK too.

I love being slightly spoiled and still being surprised! Had no idea the Mayor was in it until the opening credits, and I heart ME so much for doing another Faith/Mayor scene (esp. since I just finished S3!!). I love how the FE dragged out all of Faith's fears, esp. about Buffy, because to be honest, Buffy wasn't acting all that rationally in Empty Places on Faith's taking her place, even though Faith really honestly didn't want to or mean to do that. I liked the Faith/Wood commiseration about parents. I even liked the Willow/Kennedy conversation. I think I even kind of get Kennedy now. Yeah, she still annoys me, but I think the writers have given her a personality, one that's shoot first, ask questions later. Still don't quite get why Willow was attracted to her, but then, being pursued and seduced is a good feeling sometimes. I liked how the Willow/Kennedy sex scenes were just as explicit as the Faith/Wood ones. I did wish that we had a little more on Xander during the Xander/Anya scene, like the had for Faith/Wood, Willow/Kennedy and Buffy/Spike. Poor Xander!

Still love Andrew, and the scene where he speaks for the Harbinger freaked me out. BTW, didn't quite get why Giles cut its throat so suddenly. Still feel Giles is kind of Firsty. I guess maybe if it were real Giles, he felt the Bringer was being too demoralizing? But then, it was the Scooby inner circle listening, not the Potentials. And they could have tried to pump it for more info. Like, info about the vineyard?

Loved this episode, even though it confused me greatly on the leadership/power question. Desperately need to watch next week's! Things that would make me very happy: people feel guilty for kicking Buffy out (which they do, so I'm ok). Buffy also apologizes to everyone for not listening to them. Apologies are accepted all round, and everyone is happy. I want Faith to be able to wield the weapon too, esp. since everyone kept forgetting earlier on that Faith was actually the legit Slayer. Want to find out if Joyce was real Joyce or not and what she meant. Want to find out what that eye thingy in Get It Done meant. Want to find out whether Buffy was right or not in rejecting the power in GID. Basically, I love Buffy, want to keep loving her, but I also don't want her to be unequivocably right, esp. about how to lead the girls, because I still feel that waging this whole thing as a war is the wrong way to do it. Or at least waging it as a war with no regard to individual lives is the wrong way to do it (ala Choices).

ETA: also loved Dawn reading Turkish and being mad about not having the translation! Yay, useful!Dawn!
