Farmers' market

EEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! HEIRLOOMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I managed to miss the last of the cherries the two weeks I didn't make it to the market, though. I mean, there were a few baskets left, but the gloriously cherry ones from last time are already gone.

But! HEIRLOOMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They have even temporarily upstaged the exclamation points that I normally reserve for peas!

I nearly missed the peas today, because I overslept. Luckily, though the normal pea guy was out, I found some more in the corner of the stall with the heirlooms. We shall see how they are.

I also skipped over the pluots and the various stone fruits, with the exception of yellow peaches from my former cherry vendor, because they are so good. I am amazed at my willpower -- while I was picking out the peas, I could actually smell the wonderful peachy nectar smell from the next stand over, even though my nose was stuffed. Next time!

I made away with blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries for my fruit quotient, four pounds of peas, heirloom tomatoes, white corn, green onion bread, olive bread and salmon spread.

And it's the Obon festival today! I think I'll go down to San Jose to check out the taiko.

OMG, so jealous. We have seen neither hide nor hair of heirlooms here... I really hate my market. Can I come stay at your house some Saturday and raid your vendors for the good stuff? *g*

Waaaah, I've started seeing heirlooms in the farmers market here, but I'm hoping we'll get them through our CSA soon, so I haven't bought any yet... but I want some!!!

BTW, I just heard about this cookbook (the "click here to look inside the cookbook" link on that page doesn't seem to work on Firefox--@ least I had to resort to IE--but it's well worth doing so) &... recipes! By growing season! And lots of little anecdotes about farms & vegetables! I've been spreading the love--I hope that when I actually get my hands on the book, it lives up to my expectations. :)

I just picked it up a couple of days ago & it's wonderful! It takes a lot to impress me w/cookbooks, but this one has such an awesome combo of the seasonally-organized vegetables & the cute anecdotes &... it's pretty, too. And apparently Farmer John, for some reason, wears a boa! (presumably not in the field...) The recipes look great, too--a whole bunch of stuff I haven't really seen before. I just bought another copy for my friend's birthday.

So, yeah, I haven't made anything out of it yet, but I love it already.

Waaah. Heirlooms. I can't get good tomatoes here; Seattle and environs don't get hot enough long enough. Waaaah.

When we lived in the East Bay, there was a vendor at the Pleasanton market who had the BEST heirloom tomatoes. Sigh.

Yes, and sublime berries now and the rest of the summer. We're still having cherries too!

Ack, is Obon this weekend? I could have sworn it was later!

I just checked-- the temple in West LA is celebrating it at the end of July, so I did not miss it. Yay! I love Obon.
