Farmers' market

I almost don't want to write about this, because I want to keep the cultural appropriation posts up near the top of my LJ.

But I'll post on that later.

Anyhow, I went to the farmers' market, and after a weekend away at WisCon, I returned to find that there were no more sugar snap peas, that the cherries have now come out full force (Tulane and Bing, mostly), and that.... peaches and pluots and nectarines, oh my!

There were only a handful before I left, and now they're everywhere! I only got a few, because I suspect the ones next week will be better, but still... I have pluots! Little purple ones, not the dinosaur ones that I love or other types like Flavor King and Flavor Queen, but still! I also have white peaches, and the guy says that white nectarines are coming next week!

I also have three baskets of blueberries, half a pound of fat, ripe Bing cherries, and, of course, a ton of English peas, sweet and fresh and crisp.

No vegetables (besides peas) for me this week, largely because all the things I bought before WisCon are still in the fridge, awaiting cookery. I think I'll finally attempt potato-leek soup if I have time today.

ETA: I think, for the first time in history, I may have bought too many peas. The mound awaiting shelling is slightly intimidating, although I doubt I'll think so when I have more peas to eat for tomorrow!

Bing cherries! Soon it will be time for them here, too. I've been waiting for months.

Do you like orzo? Because I discovered an orzo recipe that is very delicious and I think you might like it. Alas, no peas, but it's full of other delicousness, it's a great summer salad.

I have been going crazy with corn myself. Inspired by someone else's corn salad that I had on Memorial Day, I tried to make up my own using actual corn on the cob instead of canned. Oy. It was mighty tasty though.

I treated myself to some blueberries, but the produce just isn't the same here. I miss California farmer's markets.

Yes, I'm not sure where our corn is coming from, people I know from corn growing states are befuddled. But it's very good!

The orzo recipe is here (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/recipe_views/views/101902).

Only I do the following:

-Substitute fresh basil for parsley (I chiffonade it like they do on the food network! Very easy and satisfying!)
-Toast the pine nuts without olive oil. Just throw 'em in a non-stick skillet and shake occasionally
-I just mix the pine nuts in at the very end, don't bother using them as toppers
-I make my dressing from two parts balsamic vinegar to one part olive oil.
-I chop the garlic and onion first and mix it all up with the dressing in the bottom of the bowl. Then I add the tomatoes and let them marinate while I do the basil. This way the garlic and onion infuses the dressing and the vinegar brings out the sweetness of the tomatoes.
-The first time I made this I used goat cheese and green onions instead of feta and red onions because that's what I had on hand. I like it both ways.

Enjoy!

*cherry envy* My grocery store had Rainiers yesterday, but they were vastly expensive and didn't look all that great. (Plus I generally prefer Bings -- Rainiers are a little too sweet.)

Totally OT, but posting this here as I don't seem to have your email: re matter we discussed at Wiscon, have been in contact with person I mentioned, who would be very interested in your getting in touch. If you would like this rather cryptic message clarified, do email me (my lj email should work).
