Mariposa, Part 2

Saturday (April Fool! Which both me and [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija completely forgot) saw me, Rachel and her dad going off on a nature walk after lunch, and, more importantly, after coffee. It's really hard getting to Mariposa -- let's just say everyone was very scared I had driven off the mountain, me included -- but the scenery there is gorgeous. All dusky greens and browns, but with small wildflowers everywhere, yellow and pink and purple and white. Also, there was this cool tree!

Well, Rachel's dad thought it was more a nuisance than anything else, but it has these tiny pink lily-of-the-valley-esque flowers, and the branches seriously look like they've been plated with copper.

I discovered a nifty underground trickle and Rachel's dad found the same one or another one by stepping into a hole, there were star-watching rocks a la Meg Murray, and much squishy mud.

Afterward, we sat on the porch in the sun (mmmmmmm sun!!!!) reading manga. Or, Blue Noon, in my case. And then, we made lemon curd and blue scone batter!

Then came Bleach, which I am liking, although I giggle at all the ridiculously shounen battles in which each Hollow is worse than the last! Gnashing teeth! Sharp hair! Much grossness! Ichigo managing to pull off feats that no one has been able to do before!

Bleach gets its own entry ^_^. Oooo, um, can I shamelessly beg my friends list to supply me with more of the Bleach anime?

It has to be noted that we watched Bleach on a half-deflated air bed, which Rachel discovered was half-deflated by throwing herself on it full force, only to slam against the floor. However, with two people on it, it gets wonderfully squishy and rolly and much giggling ensued as we took turns trying to launch each other or squiggle toward the laptop while flailing around.

Rachel's parents were very nice and treated us to dinner at a little restaurant. Since this was Mariposa, it was a rather small restaurant, and we were almost immediately greeted by our waitress (an extremely frightening looking lady in VERY TALL stiff black curly hair and extremly goth clothing and did I mention the unmoving VERY TALL hair?). She then proceeded to nix all wine options except one, given that they had run out of nearly everything. I think both Rachel and her dad wanted to go for the lamb, but of course, they were out (Rachel groaned. The waitress proceeded to skip right over her and go to the next person).

I felt very out of place, given that I think I was the only Asian person in the entire county or something! Also, there was a picture of some pioneer guy with a fox draped over his head on the wall (I couldn't tell if it was alive or dead or which would be worse). And there was the live music, which consisted of two guys loudly singing. Me and Rachel both tried very, very hard not to giggle during the music, but at one point, they launched into a song that had a chorus of "Yippee ki yi yay" or something. We both tried really, really, really hard not to laugh by attempting to kick each other under the table, but I think I hit Rachel's chair leg and she hit her stepmom, since we were both wildly flailing our legs and snorfling back laughter.

At this point, one of the singers let out a high-pitched "YIP!" and I nearly fell out of my chair while still trying not to laugh out loud.

Rachel's dad didn't help at all -- once I was somewhat under control, he very quietly yipped again, and I nearly choked on my food.

Oooo, we were also eating with two other Baba-lovers (I still get caught off guard when they talk about themselves as Baba-lovers, for some reason), and Rachel tried to explain anime to them ("No, it's not weird. Yes, it's TV. No, it's not all sci-fi robots. Yes, it's quite popular among many demographics. No, it's not weird....").

Oh, Rachel has also told me to note that there was an incredible amount of Baba paraphernelia around the house, in case anyone who read her book doesn't believe her. I'm confirming this. Actually, the study of the little cabin we were staying at had boxes of Baba videos and a map of Meherana ("Ooooo!" I went. "It's just like the book!"), and this doesn't include the many pictures of Baba and assorted people related to Baba (at least, that's what I figured).

After dinner, we went back and baked the scones and made whipped cream and then proceeded to eat scones hot out of the oven with lemon curd and raspberry jam and whipped cream and watched more episodes of Samurai Champloo with Rachel's parents and the two guys from dinner, after which there was another attempt to explain things. ("No, suicide to preserve honor isn't just a weird Japanese thing. No, really. No, REALLY. ARRRRRRRGGGGGHHH!" said Rachel)

Then we star-watched! The night sky in Mariposa is absolutely amazing! Ahhh, the pluses of low population density (the minuses being very small grocery stores and the very high probability of falling off a mountain). But! I saw Leo and the Big Dipper and still couldn't for the life of me pick out anything else. But we stood and froze and strained our necks because everything was so clear and beautiful.

But we completely forgot to pick out our own constellations! (I wanted to pick out things like "Hakkai's vine" or "Scars of Gojyo" or something)

Then.... more Bleach!

Tune in for the next write-up, in which a maniacal, possessed parakeet makes Rachel fall off the bed and in which I get very freaked out by dead and/or dying rodents.

Totally off-topic, but I am amused to note how you updated your "TV" sidebar.

Great! Send it on as soon as you're done!

I think soon you will have to add Bleach and Samurai Champloo to the list.

Dad and I were probably the only Jews in Mariposa, but just think: if I hold a get-together based off of my f-list, the Asian contingent in the county will go up by several hundred percent.

I take this excuse to use my favorite Bleach icon. Because Rukia is awesome!
