It took a reread to figure out what happened in the end of Spindle's End, but I liked it a lot. It was worth having just for the opening paragraphs on magic and dustiness.

I watched the pilot of Lost and ended up bailing out because it looked like JJ was doing a lot of the same gender stuff there that he was doing with Alias that I dislike. I may end up watching later if everyone keeps raving though.
