I agree, although I'm not very read in the subject. I don't know how Joey Hill's sucessful paranormal romances stack up to it, but I really enjoyed a short novella she wrote which is a contemporary (with one very hot sex scene at the end) called Virtual Reality. It worked so well because it explored the approach between dom and sub and the risks they both took.

But someone who really lives the lifestyle might have a completely different impression.
