(no subject)
I was going to make another post, but... white corn!
As in, I was going out and running errands. Scheduled my car for maintenance (ugh), then headed over to the library to return overdue books (they make lots of money off me, good for them). I told myself I wasn't going to get anything, because I still have to read the other two books that came with the Shadowheart Amazon order (free shipping, that dastardly promotional plan) along with all the other recent bookstore buys. But then I said, maybe I will just wander up and down the sff aisle for a little, you know, just browsing.
We all know what happens next, of course ;). So I pulled out Patricia McKillip's Winter Rose, which has been sitting around in the bookstore, tempting me. I have been valiantly holding off, waiting for a trade paperback in near fine condition, because the covers alone are worth it. And I read the first line: "They said later that he rode into the village on a horse the color of buttermilk, but I saw him walk out of the wood." How could I not flip through and read the next ten pages? And then I figured I had no time to read it, I had ten other books or more stacked up, and I walked off. I read this freshman year college (or sophomore?), and I don't remember much, just that it's Tam Lin and slightly melancholy.
Over on the other side of the aisle, which I swear I was just browsing, looking for who knows what, is Caroline Stevermer's A College of Magics, which I am currently borrowing from the store, and When the King Comes Home. And I don't know anything about her, just that she co-wrote Sorcery and Cecelia, which I have not read but am already half convinced that I love already, and that other people on LJ like her. So I ended up pulling that off the shelf. Then I ran back for the McKillip, because Rois' voice is still in my head, and really, who borrows only one book from the library?
I cannot resist free books. Half the time I can't even resist books I have to pay for, so really, not succumbing to free books is just too much to ask of me.
Then I was driving back and saw "White Corn, 5 for $2." Decided to go to the other open-air market because generally they're cheaper.
And oh, vegetables! I haven't cooked in a long time because of various family visits and sheer laziness, and suddenly I was there and surrounded by vegetables and fruits! Yum. And it's almost summer, and it's really almost time for summer vegetables, right? I have two artichokes now, and grapes for the rats and spinach salad and three ears of white corn because I am being good and cautious about buying too much.
That said, I am currently nearly drooling and the white corn is cooking, and I want it done and in my mouth rightnowdamnit. It's not really the prettiest white corn, and it was more expensive than the other place (grrr), but I couldn't help it. I haven't had it since October or November, and I was there thinking of plump corn kernels and the fresh sweetness of it, even though they weren't nearly as large or firm as they will be, and now my hands are sticky from peeling and divesting them of the silk.
Food and books = happy me.
